What Happens To These UFAs

from Allan Muir of Sports Illustrated,

... here’s a look at some of the key names out there and what might lie ahead for each.

Ron Hainsey

There are whispers that his role as an NHLPA mouthpiece during the lockout has led to the 32-year-old defender being blackballed. Take a look at where Chris Campoli’s principled stand landed him and you can see that there just might be something to it. The bigger issue, though, might be what Hainsey brings to the table — and judging by the line of Jets fans who were willing to drive him to the airport when his last contract expired, that might not be much...

Brad Boyes

Boyes hoped that by signing a one-year, $1 million deal with the Isles last summer, he’d prove that he still had plenty to offer in the NHL. Honestly, he did his part, tallying 35 points in 48 games while riding shotgun with John Tavares and Matt Moulson....

more including a look at seven more ufa's...

I’m a little surprised Brunner hasn’t signed anywhere yet.  I’m a little surprised Whitney
is as well.  I know Whitney has flaws but it’s not exactly fair to judge anyone by Edmonton stints, where everyone’s game always suffers.

I’m EXTREMELY surprised Grabovski and Boyes haven’t latched on to an offense-starved team like NAS , FLA, ANA or something.  A team needing help could sign both quite frankly and bolster their Top 6.  Grabovski isn’t going to VAN to be behind Kesler and Sedin, I don’t get why that’s a suggestion.

I’m not surprised Hainsey, Morrow, and Murray are out there.  They’re probably done.

SI’s got the causality backwards here. Campoli (or “Crapoli” if you’re a habs fan) flat out couldn’t play. He could be a “bad cop” because he knew goddamned well that he wouldn’t be signed by an NHL team, anyway.

I don’t know that Hainsey being “blackballed” would be accurate either. Those middle to bottom pairing free agent defensemen are really getting squeezed by the cap going down. Whitney, White, Murray, Gilbert, Redden…none of these guys were involved in negotiations and none of them have jobs right now.

Hainsey probably belongs in a grouping with them in terms of value added (he might be at the top of the pile, but that IS the right pile for him), so him not being signed isn’t a surprise to me.
