West Side Story

The first glimpse of the Winnipeg Jets’ return to the ice goes down at 7:30 Pacific time (9:30 Central), as the rookies/prospects take on the San Jose Sharks’ youngsters in Penticton at the Young Stars Tournament. To watch the game, visit the tournament’s site for live streaming.

The Jets held two rookie/prospect practices over the weekend at the MTS Iceplex (where the Jets will be doing the bulk of their practicing), and drew healthy crowds to both the Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning drills. I attended the former with around 1,000 others, who loudly welcomed the kids out on to the ice and watched each drill with the same enthusiasm likely to be found at the MTS Centre throughout the year.

There were a few standouts at the Saturday afternoon practice, including some strong end-to-end action by the line of Carl Klingberg, Mark Scheifele and Jason Gregoire. Most of the kids look like they need a couple of years to beef up for the big leagues, although d-man Cody Sol is listed as 6’ 6” and 240 pounds - he looked like a monster out there against some of the smaller kids. Russian Ivan Telegin (listed as 6’ 3” and a measly 187 pounds) looked quick on the ice, showing a great ability to find the sticks of linemates Jordan DePape and Eric O’Dell. First-round pick Scheifele showed some real skill on a breakaway, absolutely undressing goalie Edward Pasquale and drawing a rousing cheer from the crowd. Edmonton’s Levko Koper did a great job on a keepaway drill against Calgary’s Adam Lowry, while defensive prospect Julian Melchiori (listed as 6’ 3” and 167 pounds, which must be a misprint) kept great pressure on his opponent in the same drill.

It’ll be interesting to see how the baby Jets come together in a game environment against the Sharks prospects. I don’t think the Jets will be wearing the new jerseys; I’m curious to know what the kids will be wearing when they hit the ice in Penticton tonight. A modified practice jersey? As long as it’s not a blank/NHL logo jersey, I’m OK with it. Expect some “go Jets go” chants from the crowd, especially as they’re opening against the lone American team. The Jets are really and truly almost back!
