Weber Fined For Hit On Zetterberg

NEW YORK (April 12, 2012) – Nashville Predators defenseman Shea Weber has been fined $2,500, the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for delivering a blow to the head of Detroit forward Henrik Zetterberg in Game 1 of the teams’ Western Conference Quarterfinal series in Nashville on Wednesday, April 11, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 20:00 of the third period. Weber was assessed a minor penalty for roughing.

“This was a reckless and reactionary play on which Weber threw a glancing punch and then shoved Zetterberg’s head into the glass,” said NHL Senior Vice President of Player Safety and Hockey Operations Brendan Shanahan. “As is customary whenever Supplemental Discipline is being considered, we contacted Detroit following the game and were informed that Zetterberg did not suffer an apparent injury and should be in the lineup for Game 2.

“This play and the fine that addressed it will be significant factors in assessing any incidents involving Shea Weber throughout the remainder of the playoffs.”

If it smells like s**t it must be s**t. There is no place in any sport for this kind of action. He should have been suspended.

Chickensh*t. Shanny was afraid of accusations of being too sympathetic to the Wings for the suspension that should have been dealt.

Ah, so apparently you get one free chance to drive a star player’s head into the glass with both hands in the playoffs, but after that there might be actual repercussions. Good to know! Would be unfortunate, but would serve Shanahan right, if Zetterberg develops concussion symptoms later today or tomorrow (as these things can have delayed symptoms), making this already ridiculous decision look even more egregious.

You’ve been a bad bad boy.

Ok, Pens fans…the bar has been set. Watch out for Crosby and Malkin…apparently it’s open season on star players’ heads.

I just watched my last NHL playoff game of the season. The NHL can go F themselves. This was a clear shot at Zetterburgs head not once but twice and all he gets is a fine. UNfuking believable !!!!

Really threw that book shaped pillow at him hard.  Not surprised one bit that Weber gets off scott free.  $2500 is nothing to him.  Injury to the player has to be taken to account, but it seems here that it was the only thing taken into account.

So apparently you can be fined twice in the same season for dangerous hits and malicious plays?

Why should Zetterbergs health be taken into consideration if the NHL is trying to prevent this shit? Weber blantantly hit him in the head and then slammed his head into the glass. I usually watch all playoff games I can watch, but I just can’t stand this junk. I would expect a suspension if one of the Wings did this to anyone else. I hope there is a lockout.

What… a…. joke…. of…. a….. league.

If I wanted to watch this kind of garbage then I would watch wrestling.

I never liked Weber because of this kind of shit. He always seemed to take liberties with our stars, Z in particular.

Fook it. I say we sign Hacksaw Jim Duggan and Jake the Snake in the offseason and oh, wait…...

A hockey play? Finishing a check is a hockey play. Shooting the puck and on the follow through if you inadvertently hit a guy in the face is a hockey play. Taking someone’s head with both hands and ramming into the glass, after ramming a guys head into the boards on the first try is a deliberate intent to maim and injure.

The league is full of crap if the way they want to view it is as a hockey play. Especially coming from Mikey Mo"tough guy”(tons of sarcasm). $2500 fine is not going to anything but make for someone getting seriously hurt in game 2.

I’m done with the NHL.

Fuch you Shanahan!

Thanks and Fuch you Gary. Ass.

Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!

Just going to put this out there (and it might be wrong as I’ve knocked it out quick on a calculator.

Weber’s on 7.5 for the season.

$7,500,000 divided by a 365 day year = $853 an hour.

If you divide that by the 182 days of the season so far (which should’ve been where his year ended), that’s $1717 an hour.

Either way, the NHL just fined Shea Weber the same amount of money he would’ve earned eating dinner after the game last night, for potentially killing a guy.

I try to be polite, I truly do, but what utter, utter, utter bullshit. I cannot believe that just happened.

Spineless.

Bertuzzi time.

The unfortunate part of that is it will not happen.  The payback will have to wait until next season.

Im thinking of having a shanahan jersey burning party. You’ve officially gone to the dark side Mr. Shanahan. I used to have so much respect for you but that decision today was gutless. You talk about consistency and fairness but this decision lacks on both counts. Do the job you were chosen to do. Playoffs, regular season whatever. We all know that if Weber had done this to Crosby or Malkin or Kane or Toews that he would have been suspended. This decision is proof of something I’ve suspected for sometime, the league hates the wings!

We’ll see how you feel about our dynasty team when we sign Weber in the offseason and he leaves Nashville for a team who has made the playoffs for the last 20 years. Enjoy your year Nashville fans, it may be your first and last.

Flyer fan here… Can’t understand the league’s thinking here.  You must injure the player
to get suspended!  Redwings fans should be irrate going after one of their best players.  Whos’ to say that wasn’t Weber’s intention!? The league wants to protect against concussions but dosn’t have the balls to do what needs to be done!

Detroit fans are pansy’s apparently.  I have never heard so much whining and complaining about what was really not that violent of a play.  Things like this used to happen all the time and fans would suck it up knowing that there would be retribution on the ice.  All of these fans throwing a hissy fit about this play just demean the whole Red Wings organization and what I thought they were all about…and this coming from a Preds fan that has admired/enjoyed the Red Wings toughness, grittiness, and similar plays they have made through the years.

Nashville fans are as clueless as they are classless apparently.

If you think what Weber did was part of hockey then Hockeytown could care less whether you admire or enjoy the organization.
