We May Have A Trade

via Darren Dreger tweet,

Hearing Bobrovsky to Columbus for draft picks. Working on details.

added 12:30pm

via Aaron Portzline tweet,

Have confirmed @DarrenDreger report of #CBJ trade for G Sergei Bobrovsky. Three draft picks going to Flyers, including No. 45 this year

.

added 1:32 PM: According to the Columbus Dispatch’s Portzline, the Blue Jackets may stick with “Bob” and Steve Mason as their goalies going forward:

“(Bobrovsky) has won in the league,” Howson said. “He had a great first season (2010-11), he’s won over 40 games in the league. I think he has the potential to be a very good NHL goalie. He’s still a young goalie. We now have two NHL goalies who have a chance to be No. 1 goaltenders, and we’re going to see how it plays out.”

Bobrovsky, 23, was 14-10-2 with the Flyers this season, sporting an .899 save percentage and a 3.02 goals-against average that were among the worst in the NHL, marginally better than Blue Jackets starter Steve Mason.

“Not great numbers,” Howson said, “but it’s understandable given the situation he was in. He was clearly the No. 2 goalie there, and (with Ilya Bryzgalov) that wasn’t going to change. He was great the first year and sort of surprised everybody. I think he has a chance to be a No. 1 goalie.”

Why Holmgren, why? Who else do we have as a back-up now?

Holy fuch, I just don’t understand the Flyers’ mentality at all.  They need goaltending in the worst way.  Now I see why the fans are in continual angst over their goalie situation.

does this indicate that Nash wont be in Philly? i would assume that if that was a real possibility, Bob would be included in the package rather than a seperate deal.

its real simple.  they needed the cap room, and a backup for them at nearly 2 million was too much.  besides all this, bobrovsky was horrible.

a bobrovsky mason tandem is not any better than what Columbus has had in the past, interesting.

I think Mason is headed to the minors or buyout.

Very few goalies ever had successful sophomore seasons after winning the Calder Trophy their rookie years.

Although I will say getting 3 draft picks, even middle rounds, for Bob is a pretty big steal. I’m guessing Holmgren has photos of Howson or something.

So Howson does this in what? Hopes he’ll get 10 draft picks and 3 top six guys for Nash?

It doesn’t matter what young goalie is in Columbus, the goaltender coaching there is atrocious and it’s where young goalies go to die.  Mason is a perfectly capable goaltender if they ever had anyone competent developing him so his game would grow.  Instead, once shooters got a read on him and his tendencies they’ve picked him apart.

As for CBus… what the heck?  Because Columbus’ future is so secure they can just burn draft picks like they’re kindling?

Bob was just as good as Lindback was through his first 38 games. Flyers felt he was stuck behind Bryzgalov. Flyers out of Nash talks. Flyers feel they need more of a veteran backup to help Bryz dealing with the culture in philly. Flyers arent done, just warming up.

looking at their draft record, they might as well burn those picks, than use them.  They have been bottom feeders almost their entire existence and has continually had top 5 picks throughout with the exception of the year they made the playoffs.

Despite contiually drafting in the top 5, their track record has been horrendous.  So many busts, it seems like almost any player sent there is destined to fail.

Columbus fans; you can’t blame the GM anymore…it’s time to blame the owner(s) as they are obviously clueless.

For those keeping score at home: The Flyers have nearly $11-million in cap space and with Pronger on the LTIR, it’s almost at $16-million. I hope Nash still likes Columbus. I dont see him getting traded.

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for second round (No. 45 overall – previously acquired from Phoenix) and fourth round picks (No. 117 – previously acquired from Vancouver) in the 2012 Draft and a fourth round pick (previously acquired from Phoenix) in the 2013 Draft, club Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Scott Howson announced today.

Columbus spends a 2 and a pair of 4’s to Philly for a guy who may not even actually be an NHL starter?

I’m just spitballing here, but I bet they wouldn’t have to sweeten an offer too much past that to get Luongo out of Vancouver.  Heck, they might not even have to offer that much.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled that a team in Detroit’s division is run this badly… still, seeing a GM as bad as Howson does make me feel a little guilty about how easy Columbus is making on everyone else.

Love it! Howson is borderline retarded!  Nothing like an unproven tandem to right the ship.  If Mase is headed for minors or buyout I don’t know who they’re planning on bringing into the mix then.  The pillow biter market is thin as shit as it is.  The forces Howson to deal Nash in a trade involving a goalie now, as if it wasn’t hard enough to find a dance partner.  Interesting to see how they plan to make up those 35+goals.. oh that’s right, Nash’s 30+ goals and 60+ points every year is worth 3 roster players a top prospect and all your first rounders for the rest of the decade.. for a player who said, let me out.  Howson has NO leverage and is asking for the world.  Do they have a worst GM award?>

I am a Wings fan first, foremost and forever.  But living in central Ohio I keep an eye on the Jackets as well.  (When I go to a game it’s usually Wings v Jackets in Columbus, saves on travel costs and get to see the Wings.)  Having to watch a team so poorly run up close is very frustrating.

Always liked Bob. Like Fleury, the guy’s really, really tough to beat low and has great lateral movement. Also like Fleury he’s all over the crease and kicks rebounds straight into the high slot. Unlike Fleury, he doens’t seem to be mental.

He needs some work high, he overcommits and kicks rebounds into the slot, but get Bob a good goalie coach to iron out the kinks and I think there’s a starter in there somewhere. Certainly came cheaper than Varliamov last year.

I was thinking ahead to when Phoenix claims him off waivers in a year.

True, but you should check out this post on NOHS (scroll down to the picture of Mike Smith)...

Burke is a good goalie coach, but is he the greatest at reclamating goalies? Doubtful.
