Washington GM Brian MacLellan On Alex Ovechkin

via Stephen Whyno tweets,

Mac on Ovechkin: "The game’s getting faster. He’s going to have to train in a different way - a more speed way instead of a power way."

MacLellan on Ovechkin: "He’s going to have to think of ways he can evolve into a player that still has a major impact on the game."

GM’s REST OF THE TIME:  “Man these bigger, power guys…. why can’t they skate more?  It’s a skating game now more than ever”

GM’s AT DRAFT:  “I’M DRAFTING THAT GUY, HE’S 6 FOOT 7 AND I DON’T CARE IF HE CAN SKATE OR DO ANYTHING ELSE!”

Ovechkin is no slower than Malkin, and Malkin seems to do just fine in the world of speed.

The stories start to hit- GM Doesn’t Rule Out Trading Ovechkin.

I am a firm believer you don’t want to tip your hand, but apparently MacLellan did want it out there.

The talk won’t stop now.

All fancy stats aside, its possible to overvalue a guy for his numbers.  This is a ridiculous analogy but its similar to a few years ago in baseball when all of sudden people realized that paying for guys hitting 30 homers but only batting .200 with a bunch of Ks was a waste of money - its possible to have dedicated a huge chunk of your salary cap to 35 goals on average per season and not much else.  When you look around the league at who is getting paid for what and how much, that’s really where his shine wears off to me.  To me, you could move him and fill a bunch of holes in that lineup and probably get similar output from someone 3 mil cheaper, on a friendlier deal to the team.  He’s more or less there to sell jerseys, which is fine, but, that’s what he’s there for right now.

For more on the Caps, the Washington Post just updated the presser with MacLellan.

can’t argue much with PMP here. insane how he still finds ways to coast in his own zone, too.

Really can’t believe Maclellan said these things publicly.  Maybe he has tried to motivate him to evolve more, and Ove hasn’t done it so now he’s going to call him out a bit?

In a league where people seem to constantly bitch about a lack of scoring I would think a player who averages almost 47 goals/season and is just about a point-per-game playoff scorer would have tremendous value. Say what you want about his lackadaisical approach to defense and general aloofness at times but that kind of production is supremely rare.

I agree.  He’s not a “complete” player, like a Stamkos for instance, but man Ovie is fun to watch.

the best hockey .gif of all time?

I think it’s better than the Datsyuk “disappearing” causing two sharks to ram into each other.

The pinnacle of hockey GIFs are the Joe Thornton lightsaber one (that one is pretty much unbeatable and justifies the entire internet on its own merits), the Ducks throwing a tantrum one, the Ovie “Controller Disconnected” one, and I suppose the one of Ovie scoring a goal on his back in Phoenix.

The next level/tier includes Datsyuk/Turco, Patrik Stefan’s Trail of Tears (never not funny), the Steve Sullivan one when the fan got hit by the puck, and Jimmy Howard punching Crosby in the face.  And possibly anyone trying to fight Zdeno Chara.

I think my vote goes to Ovie Controller Disconnected.

I forgot about it, watched it, and started laughing uncontrollably.  In a quiet office.

back to the point at hand: he definitely did that on a key pens goal this spring. was two steps away from a guy receiving a tap in and did nothing. i don’t even care about the caps, and it drove me nuts to see that!

This has been my first introduction to all of these and they’re incredible. Where do you find them real time? The only person I know is Pete Blackburn and his are of their own style. We need a hockey gif open thread at KK or something. Would be amazing and I’d check it everyday.

@myregularface on Twitter is good for real-world, unedited GIFs of action as they happen (neat, amusing, interesting plays, or just straight up highlights).  Steph is a cyborg or something to churn those out like she does every night.  To give you an idea, she made THN’s list of 100 Most Influential People in Hockey this last time, IIRC.  For making hockey GIFs.

As for the edited ones…. they just show up.  Often on Twitter or other forums where images are used more liberally.  A lot of the SBNation team blogs are collectors (or creators, or at least where they go out into the wild) of GIFs.

Also, Barry and Tim (Burke) on Deadspin do good GIF work daily.  I think Tim does his own at least, not sure where Barry gets his or if he makes them.

I’d put the Corey Perry stealing Alex Semin’s stick gif in the second tier too.  That makes me laugh every time I see it.
