Waiting For A Chance

NHL tough guy and local hockey hero Ryan VandenBussche is training hard and waiting -- waiting to see how he heals from neck surgery, waiting for a decent contract offer from a big-league club, and waiting for a court date on charges of assaulting police. VandenBussche, 33, is undaunted. The unsigned free agent says he believes he still can play in the NHL. He is optimistic and upbeat but also realistic about the future of his career. As general managers peruse the free agent market this summer, “players like me are on the back burner,” he acknowledges.
