TORONTO (February 9, 2011)—New Jersey Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov has been suspended for three games and will forfeit $68,548.38 for delivering a blow to the head of Carolina Hurricanes forward Zach Boychuk in NHL game #802 last night, the National Hockey League announced today.

“While he has not been involved in a supplemental discipline incident previously and it is fortunate that his opponent returned to play in the game, Volchenkov delivered an illegal blow to the head,” said NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell.

Whoah, I wasn’t expecting that, but that’s pretty good.

So Matt Cooke should get 4-6 games, and I’d be fine with 6+.

I see the original Cooke article is over-flowed, I just would like to say this about Cooke’s play last night on Tyutin:

Tyutin deserves any injury coming to him and Cooke deserves any punishmnet coming to him.

I don’t know if all the replays show the whole play or not. Tytutin watches as Cooke follows him to the corner and sets the bait by facing the boards the entire time, and Cooke stared straight into his numbers from at least the faceoff dot and decides not only to plow into him, but leave his feet and use the added momentum to hit him from behind.

Both are idiots, both deserve punishment, but Cooke needs to sit for a long time, this season he’s been at his worst, and I’ve watched Canucks and Penguins games for a long time. He’s never been as consistently dirty and ridiculous as this season.

Paul didn’t post video of him the other night when the player was on his stomach on the ice with a ref on his back, and Cooke flung his body over the ref to punch the guy in the back of the head (also hit the ref with his forearm in the process) with his gloved hand. After a big clean hit.

I change my vote to I think he should get 3 games, and think he’ll get 1 or 2.

.

Stopped reading after that.

Can somebody tell me if the rest is also full of caveman logic?

As for Volchenkov, I’m glad he got three games for this.  I’m hoping it’s a trend that the NHL is starting to listen to the people saying that suspension lengths need to start increasing.

Thanks for baiting me into reading the rest of that post and wasting my time instead of yours. Defensemen should just learn to skate backwards to retrieve pucks heading towards the boards so they never have to turn their backs.

Volchenkov should have gotten more, but it looked like a brain cramp on his part and he just reacted. If he meant to do it or not shouldn’t have even been part of the equation and I’d have given him 6 games.

Cooke was sure to get no more than 4 since this was a phone call violation. Repeat offender means nothing in this league if you wear the right colors.
