Stu Cowan of the Montreal Gazette,

Mailloux decided to punish himself in his own way for his actions, but the Canadiens decided in their way to reward him by drafting him in the first round.

With the OHL season cancelled because of COVID-19, Mailloux was playing for SK Lejon in Sweden when he was fined by police for showing a photo to his teammates via Snapchat that depicted him and an 18-year-old woman engaged in a sexual act. The photo was taken without the woman’s consent.

The woman went to local police and while Mailloux was not arrested, he was charged with invasion of privacy and defamation and paid a fine reported to be $1,650.

“Well, this is something the league probably wishes didn’t happen, but now it has happened,” ESPN’s John Buccigross, who was hosting the NHL Draft TV coverage, said after Bergevin announced the Canadiens’ pick.

Bergevin did the bare minimum in explaining this.
