Less than a week after learning his wife Nicholle has been diagnosed with cancer, the goaltender rejoined the Senators at her urging because the his teammates needed him back after the club lost backup goaltender Andrew Hammond after the first period of Friday night’s 5-2 loss to the Calgary Flames.
Playing under very difficult circumstances, Anderson made 37 stops for his second straight shutout and 35th of his career as the Senators closed out this western road swing with four of a possible six points after a 2-0 victory over Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place on Sunday night.
As the Senators gathered around their goalie, he had tears in eyes and so did everybody around him.
“It really hit us approaching him on the ice because he broke down out there,” said defenceman Marc Methot. “I can only imagine what’s running through his head. The way he came out and performed, that’s a pretty brave thing do.
“We all just fell into that emotional feeling with him once we saw him and it was the same with (coach) Guy (Boucher) in the room. What he’s going through, it takes a lot of bravery to play a game like that for us.”
