I’ll be honest: Matt Cooke could retire, become a monk, and spend the rest of his life helping orphans in Calcutta and I still wouldn’t like him. That said, he’s done exactly what a lot of his critics (me included) wanted: changed his game—in fact, improved it!—by refraining from taking advantage of chances to injure other players. So, intellectually, I have to admire it. Emotionally, though, I’m wondering why the impetus for change came with the fifth suspension instead of the first.

If I were him, I would have been surprised when management came down so hard after the McDonough suspension. After all, they stood by him (contract extension, salary increase, assistant captainship) after all the other suspensions and attempts to injure. With all that positive reinforcement, why would he have tried to change? That talking-to from Mario must have come as a real surprise. Was it about injuring other players or about injuring other players after his owner had made a fuss?
