from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

General manager Steve Yzerman is expected to meet with Blashill soon, to discuss Blashill’s future with the team.

“No, nothing,” said Blashill, when asked about whether he has any meetings set with Yzerman. “We’ve just been focused on the season. The game has just ended, so I plan on watching girls’ lacrosse and boys hockey (Saturday, his children’s games). I’ve been focused on the game (Friday) and I have a sports-filled weekend with youth sports.”

What are these water bits under my eyes?

I first met Z at an “Islanders Draft Party” - but I forget the year.  It was either 1997, 99 or 2000.  It was at Nassau Coliseum and a big draft year for the team.  Let’s say it was 97, and the Isles rookie camp would start the next monday at a local arena….  The team had invited players previously drafted by the team and attending camp to hand out “lineup cards” so people could note the picks made and follow the draft.  If it was 97 - it was the year NYI was picking 4th and 5th overall (Luongo and Eric Brewer)

So I decided to meet some friends at my section and sit there for the draft (Section 303 - gate 11)  They picked up the TSN feed and showed it on the jumbotron.

I get to Gate 11 and i have to look UP to make eye contact with the player handing out the cards.  (Note: I am 6’3)  and I said ” Oh, Hi, you must be Zdeno Chara!”  and he said “How did you know?”  and I said ” We don’t have any other players who are 6’ 10 that i am aware of”

We talked for about 20 mins.  About family, about the history of the Islanders (he wanted to know what it was like in the past) and about how it was to live on Long Island.  Most people in hockey think Long Island is the Long Island Marriott and the parking lot - but there is so much more.  Just a lovely young guy who had his whole future ahead of him.  I did not realize at that time - I was talking with an NHL Hall of Famer.

Fast forward to now - I have not met him since - but ask Bruins fans about him and his impact there.  I know Caps season subscribers who had met him and were upset he did not come back.  Now that he had returned to the team who drafted him, last night - the fans did not want to see him go!  On what might be his next to last shift he blocked a shot - and it was painful -  when we were down by 2 goals and came back and scored on what might be his last professional shot.  If Hollywood were writing it - it would have been a game winner.  We all were going crazy!

While with the Bruins - we had some hard fought games and no one in my section likes the Bruins - but we always had a soft spot for Z.  Now that said - if he goes to the Leafs or the Rangers - all bets are off, and good Lord, don’t let him go there or to the Pens / Flyers.

Personally, I can see a fit back with the Islanders - depending on what Lou does in the offseason.  Some of my friends disagree with me. could be the 7th dman at his cap hit if he were willing to accept that role.

Yes, he has lost a step or two.  His shot is not the way it was in his heyday.  I don’t understand all the new hockey metrics, but I do understand the plus/minus stat, which yes, can be very flawed.

The Isles gave up 6 more goals than they scored this year.  With the exception of 2 players - all were either at 0 or had a minus stat.

The two who had a positive stat?  Adam Pelech led the Delta pledge class with a + 20.  THAT is amazing.  One other player was at a + 8.  Zdeno Chara.

AT HIS CAP HIT - he had an effective year.

Let’s see what Z decides.  I am a huge fan of his and so glad he was able to come back and play with his first NHL team - if this is indeed the end.

Making this a Red Wings centric post - Steve should give Z a call.

Think about the defensemen that Z has helped.  Ask Charlie McAvoy about him.  Ask Noah Dobson about him!

Dobber had 50 points in a breakout year for the 3rd year player.  Z mentored him and was his partner and Dobson had a fabulous year and really took charge on the power play and is poised to grow more.

I wonder if Moritz Seider would benefit from having Z on the team?  If Simon Edvisson makes the team - would be nice to have Z keep the flies off him and protect the other guys.

Just sayin!  smile

(But the opportunity cost of giving ice time to Z vs. playing younger guys is a valid point not to do it)
