NEW YORK (Feb. 14, 2020) – Edmonton Oilers forward Zack Kassian has been suspended for seven games, without pay, for kicking Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Erik Cernak during NHL Game No. 882 in Tampa on Thursday, Feb. 13, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 17:38 of the first period.

Kassian is considered a repeat offender under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, will forfeit $166,463.43. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Well done DPS, a rarity.

Necessary, as it’s a potentially very dangerous action.

I just have zero faith that this punishment would have been applied
equally to other repeat offenders on other teams (don’t even need to mention which one in particular).

And it doesn’t seem like the “repeat offender” standard is applied
equally with all offenses. It’s really seemed, unless my recollection are
way off, that in other cases the Department of Dartboard Sciences has come back saying essentially “well, he didn’t do that exact type of dangerous play before, so we’re going to ignore all of the other dangerous, suspendable plays he’s made previously”. There always seems to be an out when they want to give certain teams or players an out.

Kassian is a borderline mental case. That makes him a dangerous player. His career was almost over before it started but he straightened himself out. He’s had it under control for awhile but now it appears that he can’t control his temper and he goes nuts. Zach, do we have to explain to you why you can’t kick someone with your skate blade?
