What Would You Say To Max Kellerman?

The boxing devotee is charged with identifying major sports?

Nothing to see here, just a ignorant blowhard who needs to make controversial statements to stay relevant.

Well he’s gotta be wrong about it not being in the top 4. UNLESS you count college football. But I’d bet ya hockey would beat out baseball if baseball was also a fall/winter sport.

Baseball gets the nice ole benefit of having every June (mostly), July, and August without the other sports playing (draft, free agency, and training camps to be considered as well).

So, you think he also doesn’t count football as one of the top four sports in America?

Just out of curiosity, what sports *do* you think he counts as the top four in America?

i normally love kellerman.  Hes insiteful on fighters and boxing and to an extant mma and usually doesnt say something without something to back it up.  Definitely wouldnt call him a blowhard.  But his opinion on hockey is obvious.  Whether its based on financials or what.  Either way, doesnt really rile me up.  I still like him.

Why do we give a flying fornication what anybody on ESPN says about anything?

Right?  They don’t even show sports anymore.  These days it’s mostly shows with people sitting around a table with laptops reading tweets out loud.

Agree on this

This seems like a fossilized lame provocation
from a couple decades ago that I guess can be pulled
out whenever hockey is in the news more than other sports
for minute.

Everyone knows hockey is still somewhat more regional
though that’s changed a lot and makes you for it in intensity
of the people who are fans. And that it’s more dependent on
tickets than big corporate or TV hype.

This is been true forever. And if you don’t care about something
and consider it irrelevant of course why talk about it?
ESPN in general is like the sports equivalent of MTV
except much more political - not a destination for actual music/sports.

Did he ever say what sport is 4th, is he making a case for MMA? or like homers said, is he counting college and pro football?

I actually think hockey has the better trajectory than the NBA or Baseball, because franchises in any given market can put competitive teams together.

Baseball benefits from the social experience of being at a game, outside in the summer, ability to get a cheap ticket, etc. but it has turned into a team with high payroll wins sport, and after roids, the Astro’s cheating, and now this bickering over money, its not a good look.  Maybe I’m disenfranchised personally being in Detroit though.

The NBA has a cap, but it too is a star driven league, where the major markets attract these collections of dream teams. It was good to see Toronto the last couple of years, but its hard to feel like teams outside of the large media markets will be a factor in the next few decades. Again might just be disenfranchised Detroit view here too.
