Video- Vincent Trochek’s Good Shootout Goal

via Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times,

The officials waved it off, even before Trocheck collected the puck and put in the second effort. The Lightning started to celebrate and leave the ice.

"We thought it was done," Stamkos said.

But the goal was reviewed and it was ruled that Trocheck kept the "puck in motion towards the goal before his shot attempt." Rule 24.2 says, "once it is shot, the play shall be considered complete."

"It was close," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. "After watching it now, it's a toss of the coin. But in the end, it all worked out. There's no controversy."

The Lightning did go on to win the game later in the shootout.

That’s not a goal.  And I bet if the Lightning had lost, Cooper wouldn’t be so even keeled about that bs.  Does the NHL get anything right?  Theyve made so many ridiculous rules over the last decade or so that even they don’t know them anymore.

Maybe something like this is the impetus for a good Sunshine State rivalry.

The argument has to be that at the end the puck goes backwards during the toe-drag, meaning that Trochek has the puck “in his possession” at the time.  That argument falls flat for me using the eye test however.  He doesn’t seem to intentionally be bringing the puck backwards—it sort of flips that way.

Still, this is a close call, and I’m not throwing an NHL-sucks hissy fit over this call going opposite how I see it.

How in the world is it close?  Even if you dont count whiffing on the shot as the end of the attempt, which you should, clearly when the puck goes completely sideways from the goal it no longer is under forward momentum.

Typical officiating shit show.

Hell no. Clearly miffed and attempt was over.

Shootouts are getting stupid enough as it is, with the slow crawl movements, let alone letting people get away with second attempts. Wish they could put a five second clock on these things, but that’d only lead to more borderline situations and video review.

While this was a bad call, I look forward to seeing people fake the in-close shot then follow it up with a shot from the side

Had the same thought when I saw it neff, players now asking themselves, Heck I didn’t know I could do that?

In golf, a swing and a miss still counts as a stroke. Intent matters. Just sayin’ wink
