Warren Foegele and Nino Niederreiter each scored in a span of 48 seconds early in the third period and Curtis McElhinney made 17 saves in relief when the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the New York Islanders 2-1 in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Second Round at Barclays Center on Sunday.
The Hurricanes lead the best-of-7 series 2-0. Game 3 is at Carolina on Wednesday.
Foegele scored his team-leading fifth goal of the Stanley Cup Playoffs off a wrist shot from the right circle 17 seconds into the third. Niederreiter scored his first on a deflection from the slot at 1:05 to give the Hurricanes a 2-1 lead.
The Hurricanes lost defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk (upper-body injury) 32 seconds into the first period, goalie Petr Mrazek (lower-body injury) 6:27 into the second period, and right wing Saku Maenalanen (upper-body injury) 3:03 into the third period.
