Video- No Goal For Loui Eriksson

via the Situation Room Blog at NHL.com,

At 8:32 of the second period in the Oilers/Bruins game, video review determined that Boston forward Loui Eriksson used his right skate to kick the puck into the Edmonton net. According to Rule 49.2 "A goal cannot be scored by an attacking player who uses a distinct kicking motion to propel the puck into the net.." No goal Boston.

That’s not a kicking motion..he adjusted he’s skate but did not kick the puck. IMO

While I wouldn’t call it a kicking motion per se, his skate did move towards the goal in adjusting it’s position.  I can see why they disallowed this.  Granted, there’s really no telling what the War Room is going to decide on any given night with kicked in goals, so who knows if they got this one right or wrong.

They really need to reword/rework this rule because it’s a mess right now, which unfortunately is indicative of too many NHL rules at the moment.  It’s a tough spot, because you don’t want to say, “nothing off the skate counts” because you don’t want to hamper goal scoring.  On the other hand you don’t want to allow players to kick the puck in the net as a bunch of razor sharp skates flying around the crease trying to connect with a loose puck isn’t the best idea either.  I don’t know what a good solution is here, but what they’re doing now isn’t that great.

If by “distinct” they mean “not at all,” then sure. Pretty distinct kicking motion right there.
