When listing issues that have caused the collapse, Gillis forget to mention the part about being in a real division now.

Divisional re-alignment is definitely a current factor, though I think their President’s Cup and game 7 SC berth were earned.

The Pacific Division is a beast with 3 potential SC finalists in the mix but the Central is no slouch. Overall, the West is just really deep right now, so yes, that plays a role in the Canuck’s demise. But to implode so graphically, and precipitously is still shocking and not due so much to the competition as something internal.

Agreed!  Torts hiring a disastrously bad fit.  Looks like mutiny to me.

gillis is forgetting that he is the MAIN reason for this implosion.  Look at how he managed our greatest assets in trades.  Grabner who has been a scoring machine in NY along with bernier and a 1st rd pick for keith Ballard and Oreskevich.  Wow that turned out great.

Then traded Samuelson, sturm and a 3rd rd pick for booth.  Granted we didnt give up much, but samuelson was still doing fairly well for us.  Obviously a gamble that did not pay off.

Then the hodgson for kassian trade,

then told luongo hes not needed, then proceed to trade Schnieder for a relatively low return.  I’m sure most would say that schnider is worth a lot more than the 9th overall 1st rd pick.  The way he has performed for the canucks and then later the devils has been insane.

signed torterella to coach the team which basically destroyed any semblence remaining of our team.  Pissed off kesler and luongo enough for them to ask for a trade.  Ended up trading luongo for nuts and bolts.

Some would say it was worth it just to get rid of luongo salary off the books.  But we also retain 15 percent of his salary.  Also if he retires early which he most likely will.  In the last 2 years we will have a 8 million dollar cap recapture penalty.

If he retires in his 3rd or 4th last year the recapture penalty will still hover around 3-4 million.

Add that to what we already retain 15 percent of his salary.  And you can see how the canucks lose this deal.

Granted gillis did have some good trades/free agent signings.  erhoff steal, samuelson/hamhuis.

He has also grossly mismanaged our biggest assets and got nothing of valule out of them.
