Video-Michael Haley Wanted A Piece Of Ryan Reaves

via Sportsnet's YouTube channel,

Ryan Reaves made it to the bench after a massive hit on Melker Karlsson, but Micheal Haley was searching for a fight and pulled Reaves off the bench to try and drop the gloves.

Why was that even necessary?  It was a good hit…actually Karlsson saw it coming and stopped a little to avoid the full hit.

Wonder if Haley will get a suspension for going after a guy on the bench.

I can’t blame him for going after Reaves as it was still a hit to crunch him as much as possible. I don’t know of a rule that says you cannot go into the other bench. Doesn’t mean there isn’t one but the refs didn’t seem to know it or call it so I don’t see how you can suspend him.

I know the league has to at least try and rationalize their decisions based on specific provisions of the rules,
however inconsistent the application or omission of penalties and suspensions is in practice.

But I have no idea how it’s not as bad to try and drag an opposing player off their bench to attack them, as it is for a player who is on the bench or sent off the ice like Witkowski was to turn around and try to engage an opponent. Of course Tkachuk instigated that with a slash when Wit was already walking away, back turned.
And the NHL seemed to think that was virtually not an issue. Because Tkachuk family name? Good old western Canadian team he’s playing for?

Obviously Witkowski got ten games.

I don’t worry about Ryan Reaves being able to defend himself.
But what if Haley is trying to drag some non-fighter and skill player off his bench to attack him?

Seems the league should want to harshly deter that kind of thing.

But the gap between should and will when it comes to the NHL is wider than the Grand Canyon.
