Video- Leon Draisaitl Spear On Chris Tierney

via Daniel Mano of the Mercury News,

Draisaitl shoved his stick between the legs of Sharks center Chris Tierney in a cringe-inducing spearing that led to Draisatl’s five-minute major penalty and ejection.

“Just feel a stick groin in my groin, so obviously it doesn’t feel well at the time,” Tierney said after the Sharks’ 7-0 win. “Just kind of dropped and went to shake it off. Takes a couple minutes to recover from something like that. But felt OK the rest of the game.”

Lucic did this in the playoffs on DDK - 5k fine.
Marchand did this in the regular season and got 2 games.
Crosby doesn’t even get a phone call.
Draisatl gets a 5 and a game - and probably a fine for supplemental discipline.

I would say “Wheel of Justice” but it’s clear the biases the league has.

How do you sit down when you’re SO butthurt?

I would, instead of your ad-hominem, appreciate a constructive retort.
The above incidents cited show a clear lack of inconsistency.

Additional discipline required for use of the term “butthurt” with no supporting argument.

The league is truly all over the place on discipline for this type of penalty, seemingly ranging
from “it’s part of a tough game - take it like a man” (Lucic, Crosby)
to relatively mild discipline, even when the player one of the worst repeat offenders in the game.

At this point, it’s straining credulity to say that giving a pass to perpetrators from Boston and
Pittsburgh is just a coincidence.

And it also seems that, given the lack of calls and supplementary discipline, this is becoming
a go-to move from players who are a) frustrated (how sad!); and/or b) wish to signal “don’t
touch me” to opponents, knowing they’ll at most get a slap on the wrist in return.

The only reason the league is not incentivizing more of this as almost a legit hockey play,
is the reality that, the next time, a player not on the Bruins, or Penguins, or Flyers (am I
missing any of Gary’s favorites?) could have the book thrown at them as an example
(to players not on the Bruins, Penguins, or Flyers).
