Downie suffered a concussion in the fight and Lecavalier lost a few teeth, both are out for their game tomorrow.

It’s shameful to watch the officials stand by while Holtby is clearly defenceless while Emery is punching him in the back of the head.  Holtby wanted no part of Emery, the official waves off his partners, then lets Emery have at him.

The officials are there to protect the players - sometimes from themselves.  Willing combatants who drop the gloves by mutual agreement, I have no problem with.  Watching one goalie pound another goalie who didn’t want to fight in the first place shoudl cost that official his job.

They should have broken up the goalie fight as soon as Holby went to his knee.  The extra shots to the back of his head were unnecessary.  Although, in the ref’s defence, I do think he was distracted trying to wave off players about to join the fracas just as Holby did go down.  Once he turned back around, he should have noticed the fight was essentially over and broke them up.

On the other hand, fighting really should be banned.  Look at all those unhappy people in the crowd watching the action.

I could not believe not one official intervened and got between the two goalies. Emery should face some kind of discipline for going after a guy that wanted no part of the brawl. Holtby did not even try to fight back and Emery acted like a total animal. He was responsible for his miserable outing, with 7 goals scored on him. I cannot condone his actions. And the official was nothing but a chicken sh!t.

The entire Flyers team is a joke. Are they going to hire a new Coach tomorrow? Maybe add another goon to the lineup?  Epic failure in Philly.

Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!

Ahh the Flyers once again reliving the days when the simply could beat up the opposition and get the victory.

Well boys…..that was 40 years ago and the Neanderthals running that club have not evolved.

Hey Ed Snyder, who’s your next head coach…...Dave Schultz????

sick

Ah, good old Francois St Laurent.

Doesn’t stop the guy who’s beating on the back of the skull of an unwilling fighter (incidentally, MMA doesn’t allow rabid punches because they’re potentially fatal….it also doesn’t allow you to beat on a guy after he’s given up for the same reason)

but hey—it’s okay because he DID stop the Capital who tried to get in there and break it up.

This is the same clown who was in charge of that Flyer Pens playoff….whatever it was.

Believe it or not, Dave Schultz was Wayne Gretzky in his playing career compared to both Berube and Holmgren.

But especially Berube, who was actually a lot worse than, say, Jody Shelley..

larry, they’re called RABBIT punches, not RABID punches.

Rabbut punches are when someone is struck in the middle area at the back of the neck around the brainstem where the spinal cord and skull meet. They are potentially fatal because hitting that area causes the back of the brain to strike the back of the skull during impact, this results in damage to the area. This particular area of the brain is responsible for vital bodily functions including breathing and circulation so any blow to that region could have devastating repercussions.

Hitting someone at the front of the face, including the job or chin, leads the brain to hit the skull at the front of the brain.  damage to this area of the brain affects gross motor skills including balance and coordination. This is why fighters who are struck directly on the chin often fall down and have a tough time getting up.  While these sorts of knockouts look brutal, they are very rarely dangerous or fatal.  Obviously, long-term and repeated impact of this type and subsequent damage to your brain isn’t good and has cumulative effects.

job or chin = jaw or chin

And to clarify, as larry said the back of the skull (not neck as I indicated) near the neck is the dangerous area to get hit in.  Time for bed as my fingers have checked out.

Congrats Emory, you are a truly great hockey player.  This is what is wrong with fighting.  One sided “fights” that make the viewers nauseous.  If the flyers continue to struggle I’m concerned about what their team will do to opposing teams to entertain their own owner.  I’m surprised Ronaldo didn’t find away to get a you tube clip from this game—perhaps he didn’t play though.

On another note, if the league is serious about safety and helmet removal prior to a fight, it seems like what Shenn did the Washington player was kind of bush.  They were yapping, Shenn decided to fight and before the other guy ha a chance to react Shenn ripped his helmet off.

didn’t even know the term had a spelling. I’ve only ever heard it from an old boxer at the gym I used to go to who spoke like he had marbles in his mouth.
