from Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun,
...captain Dion Phaneuf, who had been stopped a couple of times by Price on one-timers, couldn’t check his emotions and went to the box for cross-checking Dale Weise in front of the Toronto net. The penalty came after Weise checked Phaneuf into the end boards.
Less than a minute later and with just 14 seconds remaining in the period, Brendan Gallagher tipped a Subban shot past Bernier.
“It was a bad penalty,” Phaneuf said. “I can’t really say much more than that. Sometimes those happen. I didn’t like the hit, but I have to put that aside. I thought he sold (the cross check) pretty good, to be honest with you. That’s part of it. I can’t take the penalty.”...
Overall, the Leafs are in a spot that can’t be envied. They had a whopping 85 shot attempts while holding the Canadiens to 49 (including 27 that got through to Bernier), which is to be commended, and they outshot their opponent for the fourth time this season.
Though Babcock has made inroads, the losses mount.
“I would say so,” Babcock said when asked if the team needs wins to validate what he is coaching. “They are hockey players, but they are human beings first. We will show them the good things they did, but in the end you’re in the NHL and you put on your uniform and you want to win. We spent as much time rolling around in the offensive zone with as many quality chances we have had all year. In the end we still made mistakes, and all you people do is remember the mistakes. That’s just the way life is.”
