Pierre scared the hell out of me. Was just listening in while watching the other game, then heard McGuire in a panic.

If there was any doubt, Svechnikov will not return.

then heard McGuire in a panic.

I’m sure he was clutching his pearls.

They were all in a tizzy because Svech hit his head on the ice, but he was out long before he went down.  He ate 2 heavy weight knuckle sandwiches and was out.

I NOW consider ovechkin a complete player.

But seriously, he made it look easy. Hope svech is okay, but he probably shouldn’t play for a few days. Of course I won’t be surprised when he’s in the line up in a couple days.

Wait, why did Ovechkin do this with a rookie teenager giving up like 30-40 lbs again?

Zero to be proud of there.

I’d consider Ovechkin a more complete player if he’d show leadership by defending a smaller teammate or standing up for a rookie, not taking advantage of one.

Diminishes his reputation in my book.

Ovechkin claims Svechnikov asked him to fight.

But it started with two slashes from Ovechkin and his gloves were off well before.

So he took advantage of a much smaller, weaker 19 yr old whom he must have known
had never fought. Extra punch on the way down after he’d already landed a huge blow.

And now a head injury.

Overall pretty needless, gutless and ultimately dangerous behavior from a veteran captain and superstar who should know better. If I was new to hockey and watching the game and saw this I’d be sickened and turned off from the NHL.

Ditto. Anybody that has been watching this game will tell you Ovechkin has been going after the kid none stop. Behind the play slashes, a punch to the ribs in game 1 behind the play, Ovie wanted this. He was trying to get the kid off his game. And it worked, but to fight the kid…..

Ovi did nothing wrong- good playoff hockey.  If he was targeting Svechnikov (whom I didn’t want to see hurt at all) then why didn’t someone from Carolina step in and defend their best player? Tom Wilson would have if someone was messing with a capital rookie.

My gosh are we really going to analyze something to that level of minutia?  If that’s the case, look at 54-second mark of the second video.  There was consent.  Agreement.  Whatever you want to call it.  He definitely nodded “yes”...who knows what happened before that, maybe Svech asked Ovie if he wanted to fight and Ovie said, “you serious?”...maybe Ovie asked him.

Who freaking knows.  But both players agreed and honestly you can’t ask for much cleaner of a start to a fight.  If Ovie twists him up then sucker punches him, or hits him blindly, I lose respect for Ovie - but he fought him cleanly and fairly.  Everything up to this was just playoff hockey.

You guys are acting like Ovie is a goon.  Shiiiiiit.  Malkin, yes at times he’s a goon.  Tom Wilson, yes, most of the times he’s a goon.  But Ovie????  Get out of here.

How is that good playoff hockey?  What a load of BS.

This was the result of a full season of cheap shots and slashes from the kid, and even then Ovy allowed him to back out.
Whining about Ovechkin makes you sound like a Pittsburgh fan. Don’t lower yourself to that level.

I had heard that Ovechkin told McGuire “if he dies he dies” on his way down the tunnel?

A pretty good example of why I’d like to see fighting removed from the game. Whether he agreed to it or not Svech has to now pay a price. Hopefully it is small and he misses zero time. But this incident almost as easily could cost him his career and affect his life. I’d rather not see that in something that is supposed to be “a game”.

Play hard, have respect for fellow players, make clean hits and get the refs / league to control the cheap stuff. Then, there is no need for boxing on ice. I know it has been a part of the game forever but its time to do away with the unnecessary risk.

Another devastating blow from DC, this time from Thag!

You all realize this is hockey right?  I know we’re in sensitive PC times, but the men are still playing the game we’ve watched our entire lives.

Ovie didn’t jump him, he challenged him and the kid concurred, he couldn’t chopped Ovie in the leg and skated away, the Canes would/should have defended him if tha twas the case.  He didn’t he stepped up, got KO’ed and learned a valuable lesson, he’s not in Russia anymore, after he woke up and stopped seeing circling birds that is.

You can be sick/upset/disgusted/etc by what happened to young Svech, but he made the decision. He didn’t have to drop the gloves, there should be plenty of other guys that can do that before him, but he decided he was going to have a go and Ovi obliged. Two consenting adults. Call it archaic, call it whatever you want. It’s still part of the game and unfortunately Ovi made him regret it.

It’s not about whining or minutia or being opposed to tough play or fighting in general.

It’s about a guy with about 40 lbs and 15 years more NHL experience and man strength goading a kid
into an obvious mismatch and then swinging to knock his head off including an extra one on the way down.

Whether it’s hockey or the schoolyard or in the lot behind a bar that’s some serious bully shit.
It’s taking advantage of a bad mismatch and trying to hurt the other guy for no good reason.

Gutless. Ovie ought to be embarrassed.
Take on someone your own size who’s gone a few rounds
- is that too much to ask. You know Ovie never will and that’s all you need to know about his character as a hockey player and person.
