Raffi Torres received two for interference.  Brent Seabrook played a shift then went off to the dressing room.

The CBC feed first, followed by the VERSUS feed below…

added 9:58pm, I’ve added the hit Torres put on Jordan Eberle below.. It is the third video and you can compare the two hits.

added 10:56pm, On the Fly’s Craig Button and Billy Jaffe with their thoughts on the hit.  Fourth video below…

Torres hit on Jordan Eberle that cost him four games.  Tonight is his first game back from suspension.

Should be suspended for rest of playoffs or 10 games, whichever is greater, fined because i don’t believe they are paid for playoff games. Why would you come back and go out and do something like this. You know your being watched.

Did Seabrook come right back out? I didn’t catch if he did. Shouldn’t he have went to the “quiet room”?  What kinda fine comes with breaking that rule?

Torres told the league he’d keep making the same hits.  Mike Gillis supported it.  At least we know Raffi Torres isn’t a liar.

Now it’s up to the league to get the message across that they very clearly don’t want him making that exact same hit and that it’s his responsibility to go after the puck and not the head.

Ten games would be a good start.

Also, I’d recommend fining the Canucks for their support of Torres in this situation.  They’re clearly part of the problem here.

Fine Gillis or the organization $100k for being enablers.  You encourage someone like Torres and they’re only going to be a bigger prick in the future.

The Canucks would be much easier to root for if they didn’t have this guy on their team.

This is nothing new for Torres, he did the same thing to Milan Michalek a few years ago, also in the playoffs:

Different part of the ice but still targeting a player’s head with a blindside hit.

I don’t know, is that blindside?  Seabrook was coming right at Torres, he had his head down and turned, but that’s not Torres’ fault.  He certainly wasn’t coming at him from a way Seabrook couldn’t have seen.  His elbow is down so no problem with that.  No jumping into the hit.  He didn’t hit high either, Seabrook’s head was just down.

Only thing was that it was interference in that Seabrook didn’t have control of the puck, but at the same time, it was in his feet.

I guess the only thing I’d like to see him change in that situation (if I were his coach) is to wait a second later…

My problem with this hit is the same problem I have with the Jordan Eberle hit.  The fact that he head-hunts instead of going for the puck is what makes it bad.

Both situations the player had his head down and in both situations, Torres completely ignores the puck in order to take advantage of a player in a vulnerable position.

JJ, I agree that’s his style and that in itself seems dirty, but isn’t that what Stevens did all the time?

I don’t want to see that edge out of the game.

I’m guessing the league might let him slide this time, because I think you can make a case, as Chris has done above.  And Seabrook wasn’t seriously injured, at least it seems that way.

But Torres just disgusts me as a hockey fan.  Going back to the Michalek hit, he’s just displayed an utter disregard for other players’ well-being.  He’s putting himself in Matt Cooke territory now (and like Cooke, he’s no bum of a hockey player), in some ways even worse, in my opinion.

i think this hit is fine if seabrook doesn’t take the shot to the head. he’s bent down, not looking at torres, trying to make a play on the puck. sure. before rule 48, these hits were fine. but with that headshot, who knows. if they hit shoulder to shoulder, seabrook might end up rehabbing a shoulder, AC joint or collarbone, but since he could have been (and i bet probably was) concussed, here we go again…

That in a nutshell is the problem.  We all like big hits.  However I think it’s pretty easy to regulate.  If you have a chance to play the puck but choose instead to go after the player and hit him in the head?  5 min., game and review by the league.

It was most definetly blindside. He was looking at the play in front of him. The puck was in front of him, looking for a player to come at him from the front, not someone trying to crush him from behind. Why not try to make a play for the puck. Putting a puck in the net, is more important then trying to deck a guy from behind. You have a 2-0 series lead and could take a commanding 3-0 lead.

Looking back at Scott Stevens’ career, there’s a lot not to like.

I enjoy watching a guy get crushed as much as the next guy, but the puck can’t be optional.

Agreed.  For years the NHL has preached “when in doubt, take the body” and we need to get to a point where it’s “when in doubt, pull up.”

I might agree if this wasn’t Torres’s SECOND dangerous hit of the game and if it wasn’t his FIRST game back from suspension.

I can’t imagine he doesn’t get suspeneded.

I hope the NHL doesn’t become a league where a huge check is a poke check and actual hitting is rare since apparently “going for the puck” is always the better play, which seems to be what a lot are advocating here.  Seabrook should have been paying more attention and it literally cannot be a blindside hit when he comes at him from the front.  This reminds me of the Kronwall hit on Havlat, that was not called a penalty until Havlat didn’t get up.

It is not Torres’ fault Seabrook wasn’t paying attention and he has just as much right to make a check as he does to go after the puck.

Seabrook was paying attention to the puck… which is what you’re supposed to do in hockey.  He does NOT have as much right to hit a guy away from the puck as he does to go after it.

One of those plays is a hockey play, the other is interference.

again: before rule 48, maybe this is a “dirty” or questionable hit, or the hawks have to get back at torres some other way ,but it is not illegal. i think under the new rule it’s illegal, like it or not.

What ever happened to the game where you had to keep your head up,
You cant skate behind the net looking behind you, your asking for your career to be ended, although the puck was not in full possession of the puck, hes on a checking line, your out there to give the d-men some bruises. not to mention torres cut around him to hit him inside the body.

Should get the same treatment as Cooke. Chuck him for the next round of the playoffs. Watching his protests and reading his comments, this guy just doesn’t get it.

Taking headshots out of the game doesn’t nullify all hitting or even hard hitting, by the way.

Doughty destroys Sedin here. Nothing illegal about this hit. Orpik sends Stamkos parallel to the ice on this one. Huge hits, nothing wrong with them. No head contact.

Man you’re a moron.  He wasn’t saying he wants Sedin or Kesler to get killed like Seabrook did because he hates them.  He said it because then you would be crying about it being a dirty headshot.  He’s calling you a homer.  Torres is a dirty scumbag and needs to be suspended the rest of the playoffs.  Period.

Incidentally, there are a boatload of guys who have had their careers ultimately ended by this same exact hit.

Trevor Letowski and Sami Kapannen both had to retire from this play and another, Patrick Eaves, is a completely different player. And that’s just the list of guys Colby Armstrong has screwed up on just this type of hit.

Awwww, Puckhound is scared that his buddy Torres is going to get rightfully suspended, so he’s trolling.

How adorable.

Guy’s a good-for-nothing goon and only the worst kind of people root for injuries to other teams’ star players.

Maybe because there’s a terrified realization in there that the Canucks can’t beat the Red Wings unless they’re missing players.  That’s why Samuelsson grabbed Datsyuk’s ankle in December to bring him down on the cheap, because he knows that nobody on Vancouver’s lineup is worthy of being on the same ice as Datsyuk.

You want bloodsports, go watch MMA.

Shoulder to chest?  You need an anatomy lesson.  I hope we do meet in the WCF, and Kronwall hits a Sedin on a LEGAL north-south hit and watch you bawl your eyes out when the shoes on the other foot.  Takes a special kind of idiot to defend Raffi Torres.  I suppose you’re a Matt Cooke fan too, huh?

You have Roberto Luongo.  So, uh, yeah, let’s not talk about goalies.  I don’t remember Jimmy Howard ever crying after a loss.  7 game series, Detroit and Vancouver, yeah I like our chances.  Won’t matter tho, Vancouver won’t get by Nashville.  Maybe you and Luuuu can share a towel afterwards.  G’night sweetheart.  Have fun touching yourself while watching Matt Cooke and Scott Stevens videos in your mom’s basement.

It is funny to me that this has turned into a canuck and a red wing fan arguing. Guess the blackhawk fans have already given up.

For the record, i am a wings fan and though i think that torres is a dbag like tootoo or cooke, i do not think the seabrook hit is suspendable. 2 minutes was too much.  I also do not think the doan hit on franzen was dirty, just unfortunate.

I hope the wings and canucks meet in the wcf. Would be a great series. I would like to see Luongo cry again.

I’m sorry, but Paul die and make you the owner and proprietor of Kukla’s Korner?  I get that you’re working until 5:30 but maybe you should take a few minutes away from posting here to actually do your job.  It’s sad, because I actually agree with you that this is a suspendable hit but the more you open your mouth the more I find myself sympathizing with the opposition.  You’ve made your point, get back to work.

I really dont get it!! Crosby takes one to the head and no suspension!!! Torres hits a guy who reaches for the puck in the offensive zone and he hits him….suspension? Seaboohoo chooses to look the other way when he gets the puck and gets hit….suspension? I figure you wanna play: keep yourself in an up right position with balance and look where you are going when you get the puck!!

I figure all you do gooders should be watching no contact hockey.

As far as Campbell…..he gives no credibility to the league….any one that tries to get some one fired because his kid was assessed a penalty…...is FukD. The league is bush league now.

One last thing…..watching the games today…...there was a lot of charging (leaving the ice when delivering body contact) and no penalties.

Interesting to see if the elbow to Kesllers head warrants a suspension?

It appears in the NHL, repeat offenders are selected by Campbell. Fk hard for the rest (CHARA) to be a repeat offender when you don’t give the warranted suspension in the first place.

Bush league!!
