I always thought that the Havlat hit was marginal, but the more I look at it, the better it looks.  All the others are not even close to being bad.  Kronwall has always had the knack for finding skaters not paying attention.  He makes them pay.

He and Stu have the bulk of their big hits ass first too which is doubly funny.

Please don’t rip me, I’m just asking…

Doesn’t Kronwall leave his feet in most of these hits?

I don’t think he leaves his feet to make the hit but he clearly comes off the ice at impact.

There’s a big misconception around the league about what exactly “leaving your feet” means in a dirty context.  The best way it has been clarified was in the video where Brendan Shanahan suspends Alex Ovechkin for three games after he charged Zbynek Michalek.

If you watch the video in this post

http://dc.sbnation.com/washington-capitals/2012/1/23/2728550/video-alex-ovechkin-suspension-brendan-shanahan-washington-capitals

, you’ll hear him clarify it at around the 57-second mark. Shanahan says something along the lines of “a player’s feet might come off the ice slightly as a result of impact”

The key portion which separates a dirty hit from a clean one is one where a player leaps in order to make contact; on a charge, the player’s feet leave the ice prior to contact. On a big, clean check, you’ll often see a player’s feet leave the ice through impact as his body absorbs the blow and dissipates it through this effect.

So to answer your question, yes, Kronwall’s skates leave the ice in most of these hits. However, the act of the skates leaving the ice is not the deciding factor in whether the hits are legal.

Same hit almost every time… catches someone on a breakout as they are turning up ice after the outlet pass. It’s a cheap shot but not technically illegal. As it was once said (possibly about someone else), Kronwall delivers “legal dirty hits”. It’s a grey area… if a guy is facing away from you but is turning around, should it be legal to paste him? He doesn’t exactly have a chance to defend himself.

The Kesler one was the best of the bunch, Kes shoulda had his head up on that one.

Also, a couple of those hits are plainly illegal. The Heatley one for example. He is well off his feet before impact. Not hard to see from the replay.

Nick how is a cheap shot to hit someone legally?

Cheap shots are hits in to the knee’s or leading with an elbow.

The Havalat hit was the worst because he left his feet and targeted the head. Havalat did even have the puck he should have been suspended longer. Plus he is repeat offender thats what the NHL needs to take out of the game.
