I don’t care what the league does to him. The Penguins need to sit Cooke for the remainder of the season, and then trade him in the offseason. There’s a place for Cooke in this league. He’s a good player and very good penalty killer. He’s not a barbarian like Trevor Gillies. But Cooke’s also a moron. Just a stupid, careless, and reckless play. He played a big part in costing his team two points today to a much inferior Rangers team. I’ve had enough.

This elbow deserves a serious suspension. Let’s see what Mario Lemieux has to say now about suspensions and fines. If he stands pat with his proposals then good for him, but if he comes out with a full fledged defense of Cooke then we can just go ahead and ignore what one of, if not the greatest player ever says from now on.

There is simply no room for debate here, the intent was clearly to decapitate someone.

That’s why even Penguins fans won’t be defending him this time, like cs6687 didn’t.  As a Penguins fan, I want to like him for what he can do, but it is what he does that just makes you sick.

Nobody with a brain can defend Cooke’s play today. With all the attention going to head shots, Cooke throws an elbow that would make Macho Man Randy Savage proud. I hope the Penguins suspend Cooke for the season.

Wow, what a surprise (shakes head). Will be even more surprised if he gets more than one or two games if any. The league could go a long way to eliminating concussions just by kicking this tool out of the game.

Gillies had two incidences. Against the pens was awful, and against the Clutterbuck, which was a high hit and deserved a suspension, but was a reaction to Clutterbuck intentionally boarding one of the Islanders. Gillies sucks, sure, but Cooke is a a dirtier player in the NHL and that’s all there is too it.

As a Penguins’ fan, I am ashamed of the behaviour of Matt Cooke.

It’s time to get rid of him or nobody will be able to take them serious any more.

Why?  Why should the penguins sit him?

Let’s see what Mario Lemieux has to say now about suspensions and fines.

Why would Mario say anything different than he already has said.  Mario said what he said after Cooke did what he did last time.  It not like Mario said something about head shots and then Cooke delivered a head shot afterwards.

Cooke plays a game that is on the line and he crosses it sometimes.  This hit was one of the least dirty.  Yea, he deserves a couple games because of the repeat offender title, but it boils down to him being late to the body, and extending the elbow out to make contact after the player moved away.

Well said, and that’s what’s so sad, he could be a very good player, and is the kind of guy you need to win in the playoffs.  Unfortunately he has no self-control or common sense.  All he has to do in these situations is separate the guy from the puck, not separate the guy from his head.

Why should the penguins sit him?

Because in the midst of a tight game and a tight playoff race, Matt Cooke put himself before the team. He played a big part in the Penguins not just losing, but probably gaining at least one point in this game. The Penguins were in control of this game and Cooke makes a stupid play. That Penguins logo on the front of the jersey is the most important thing, and Cooke put himself above that today.

Are you freaking serious?  He intentionally blindsided the guy in the head with an elbow.  The fact anyone would make an excuse for the hit is just sad.

More than a couple games, as a consistent offender this needs to be on the high end of suspensions.

The penguins powerplay is what cost them the game.  Without capitalizing on the pp, there is really no chance in this league.  Plain and Simple.

I am not trying to come across as a supporter of illegal hits, but lets not confuse terminology here.  This is not a blind side hit.  This was an elbow to the head from behind while trying to finish a check.

I am not making excuses for him, i am saying it is not as bad a hit as many would argue.  I would equate this to the hit that Mike Green took his last game played.

Any word on Mario’s response to the elbow?  LOL
Cooke is a repeat offender.  20 games minimum and Dan Bylsma and the organization should be fined!!!  Tha NHL has to send a message to the Penguins.  They’re the dirtiest team in the league and Cooke shouldn’t have been in the lineup in the first place.  Bylsma is a wise guy.  He wanted to send a message to the Rangers by dressing Cooke,  it’s time to hold him responsible too!!!  No excuses!!!

But lets not lose sight of the fact of the reason they lost is because they have a PP & PP Coach (Bylsma) who is absolutely %#%#ing Clueless. They had a chance to hire Barry Smith a bona fide PP guru & instead took his Butt Buddy former asst. coach Reirden & Bylsma took over the PP himself. & now us Pens fans see why he had no problem with Mike Yeo’s PP the past 2 seasons, because Yeo’s was better than his

if he’s on my team i take clappers at his head next practice.  you suspend him because his bonehead plays lose games and make your team look like a joke.  put down the drink and take off your penguins goggles and then take a look at the hit.  it’s just plain dirty.  you see guys miss hits all the time on the side boards and they don’t come up and clip the player in the face with the elbow.

i understand you want to support your team but come on…  there’s a point where you just have to say that he’s a scumbag.

Cooke should get ten games maximum. Gillies second suspension is the precedent here. But I don’t care. I want the Penguins to sit him for the rest of the season.

If the league failed to send a message after the Islanders assault on the Penguins in February, there no going to do so here. Sorry, Roger.

Gillies’ minor league behavior eclipses any infraction by any current player not named Todd Bertuzzi, who never did anything out of line again.

An elbow to the head from behind is blindside.  And to say the elbow was finishing a check is to say the elbow was an afterthought, which is wrong, the elbow was clearly the primary intent.

Gillies sucks, sure, but Cooke is a a dirtier player in the NHL and that’s all there is too it.

After Gillies slammed Tangradi’s head into the boards, he then began punching Tangradi in the back of the head while Tangradi laid face down on the ice.  From there, the refs pushed him out of the ice into the doorway where the ice crew exits the ice where Gillies decided to stay instead of head towards the dressing room.  From the doorway Gillies began taunting Tangradi as the medical crew helped Tangradi towards his feet.  Tangradi has still not played a single NHL game since this incident.

Are you sure you feel Cooke is a dirtier player than Gillies???

Gretzky to lemieux,

You sound like Brian Burke.  Regardless of how severe the hit was, and I though it was VERY severe, it’s a pointless hit that needs to be taken out of the game.  When Crosby gets back into a game and gets a shot like that from some cooke-like player, will you be calm then too?  Please, stop embarrassing yourself.

I have not once said Cooke does not deserve to be suspended.  I am simply saying this is not as bad a hit as everyone is making it out to be.  Of course i would never want to see Crosby take a hit like this, nor any player.  But it is less severe a hit as other hits we have seen this year.

Absolutely not.

This isn’t a reaction play or a situation where someone tried to draw a boarding penalty. Cooke lined the guy up at elbow length for no discernible reason at all. It’s not even like the Heatley business which is unallowable but, at least, somewhat understandable, considering the way the victim plays. Cooke just suckered McGuffin (or whatever his name was) in the jaw, on purpose, for no good reason.

In all likelihood this senseless play cost his team a game against a division rival and some poor shlub a mouthful of teeth and some brain cells.

Make an example, Colie. Nobody will object.

Since we all think the NHL sucks at meting out discipline, and Lemieux has loudly come out against senseless hits to the head; wouldn’t it be something (and start to change the state game from the inside, setting a shining example of class for the rest of the league) if the organization decides to enforce their own in-house suspension of Cooke?

It obviously won’t happen, especially since Cooke does have some value as a contributor to a team looking to max their position in the playoffs, but just imagine what the world would be like.  Have a big press conference, pat yourselves on the back, and make the NHL look like a bunch of impotent fools in comparison.

gretzky_to_lemieux makes a valid point about the way Campbell hands out suspensions, and I think that is precisely the failing of the league.  It does seem to matter to the league how badly the victim is hurt - and it shouldn’t.  The penalty for an elbow to the head (insert other any other subject for supplementary discipline) shouldn’t be subjective.  X games for first offense, Y games for second, Z games for third, etc.

If Cooke were on my team, I’d be a hypocrite if I didn’t immediately put him on waivers.

MarkK, that’s an excellent point that I’m surprised I haven’t seen made yet.

After all, nobody is MAKING the Pens play Cooke, right?  I mean, if Mario is so, so soooooooo worried about the health of the NHL he could always have Cooke benched for the good of the game, right?

Instead of sending letters to Bettman, why doesn’t he send one to his own head coach and lead by example instead of complaining from his desk?
