Video- Marchand Given A Five Game Suspension

Brendan Shanahan explains.

added 6:45pm, NHL release is below…

NEW YORK (January 9, 2012)—Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand has been suspended for five games and will forfeit $152,439.02 for clipping Vancouver Canucks defenseman Sami Salo during NHL Game #598 in Boston on Saturday, Jan. 7, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

Marchand, who received a two-game suspension in March 2011, is classified as a repeat offender under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Accordingly, he forfeits his salary based on the number of games in the season (82), rather than the number of days (185).
The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

The incident occurred at 18:47 of the second period. Marchand received a major penalty for clipping and a game misconduct.

Marchand will miss games Jan. 10 vs. Winnipeg, Jan. 12 vs. Montreal, Jan. 14 at Carolina, Jan. 16 at Florida and Jan. 17 at Tampa Bay. He will be eligible to return Jan. 19 at New Jersey.

Seems like Shanahan took some time to make it clear that Julien, Marchand, Chiarelli and the rest of the Boston Bruins need to drop the BS about this having been “defensive”.

Too bad Marchand didn’t have an in-person hearing. He deserved more.

5 seems good enough but 7 would have been better.

Cambell should have faked an injury when he was low bridged in the first period in a similar hit. No call, no nothing, Thorton as well when the entire Vancouver line piled on him.  Sure the hit was low, and I suppose the suspension is just, considering Sammy “I’m fragile” Salo got hurt but still.

Boston’s response: http://bruins.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=610837&navid=DL|BOS|home

“it is frustrating that there are clear comparable situations that have not been penalized or sanctioned in the past.”

Does Peter Chiarelli really wants to play the “well, other players have/have not been suspended for X infraction” game? Pretty sure we have all been scratching our heads on a regular basis wondering why Bruins players don’t get suspended for things players on other teams have been banned for.

Statement from Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli Regarding Suspension to Brad Marchand

While we respect the process that the Department of Player Safety took to reach their decision regarding Brad’s hit on Sami Salo, we are very disappointed by their ruling.

While we understand that the Department of Safety is an evolving entity, it is frustrating that there are clear comparable situations that have not been penalized or sanctioned in the past.

“It is equally disappointing that Brad sought the counsel of the Department this past Fall for an explanation and clarification regarding this type of scenario so as to adjust his game if necessary. He was advised that such an incident was not sanctionable if he was protecting his own safety.  Given our feeling that Brad was indeed protecting himself and certainly did not clip the player as he contacted the player nowhere near the knee or quadricep, today’s ruling is not consistent with what the Department of Player Safety communicated to Brad.”

So Chiarelli’s saying that Shanahan told them “An action is not sanctionable if the player is protecting himself.” Obviously a load of bull.

”...it is frustrating that there are clear comparable situations that have not been penalized or sanctioned in the past.”

Just like James Wisniewski, right?

brad marchand is a good player… but he needs to get rid of cheap shots out of his game… if it was kesler or burrows instead of salo… it would have been easier to understand his explanation for this.. but the guy on the recieving end was salo, the softest guy in the league… the guy gets injured while playing floor hockey lol

@ Realmk….Thornton came into the bench area, with speed, and dropped a full force sucker punch which should be suspendable.  Then he stayed for some face-washing.  And you think he shouldn’t have gotten mobbed?  You pathetic drooling retard piece of shxt.
If you are a Boston fan, just say that you miss the ‘70s and you think the tougher team should win.  I can live with that even though it is lame.  But don’t say “nuuh, they did it first…”.  Cause that is some lame shxt.  And it doesn’t jive with the theory that the Nucks are wimpy divers.  The whole league knows you guys have the refs in your pocket and that you out-dirty teams to gain the edge.  At least be proud of it.  I was just reading a douche saying, “what about the snowshowers….what about biting”.  You dumbass pieces of shxt…...

Anyway, as someone who firmly believes that the Canucks would have won the cup had the rulebook been in effect, and who obviously also thinks that Coley stole the series, let me be the first to say wow, I was wrong here.  I thought there was no way a Bruin would face suspension.  Must be awfully confusing for Marchand, who was allowed to do that and a dozen slewfoots (which got him a fine this year) in last year’s Finals.  Which in itself tells you the rulebook wasn’t in effect.

I used to have respect for Claude Julien (he was damn good against Tampa), but did anyone see him crying bloody murder over every single call?  Guess what Claude, your team deserved some penalties.  I guess you aren’t used to it though.
The game opened with 5 Canucks scoring chances in three minutes.  Suddenly Thornton is throwing sucker punches in front of the bench and starting a line brawl.  Whose gameplan was this?  Yeah that’s how the Canucks tend to start a game.  And Julien thought it should be even up.  Fvcking Neanderthal.  Really classy crowd there too.

I am pleasantly surprised by the length of suspension.

Is the Boston organization trying to take the Whine out of Chicago and Calgary?  These thugs get away with so much because Bettman and Jacobs are close buddies.  (You bet, I think the commish is corrupt.)  If it had been someone on any team but Boston, he would have gotten 10.

Shanahan has to contend with his bosses, or he would be able to slam some sense into these idiots who are pretending to be the Bruins.

You crying Boston fans, get over it.  Marchand is a dirty player, as bad as Carcillo, and deserved more than he got.  Now quit crying, you babies.

I have no problem with Marchand getting a game or 2 for the hit, it was on the low side, especially since Salo got hurt, granted you could breath on Salo and he’d get hurt but that’s besides the point. What I do have a problem with is a similar hit happening in the SAME GAME that didn’t so much as get a 2 min call. Never mind a suspension.

Refs in Boston’s pocket? um ok if the refs are so in Boston’s pocket, please explain why the Bruins were penalized 13 times in that game vs Vancouver’s 6? It’s not like Canuck players didn’t do their fair share of dirty hits or cheap shots in that game.

There’s obviously still bad blood between these two squads after last year’s playoff run but I think there’s a pretty good reason a bunch of Canadian fans of the sport were rooting for Boston during the finals last year and I’ll give you two hints, whiny divers, Burrows. Ok so that’s 3 I gave you an extra one for good measure. I mean the Habs dive alot but they have nothing on Vancouver players.

Marchand plays with an edge, he’s one of those guys that 29 other fanbases hate but would love if he were on the team, I seem to recall during the finals one of the sedin twinks taking a run at him and ending up dumped on the ice when Brado ducked. But hey Boston is a bunch of no skill thugs apparently, who knew you could win a Stanley Cup that way, Their league leading defense and goaltending sucks as does their +68 goal differential. Clearly they are a no skill team just winning games on thuggery alone.

Kid is talented but he’s en route to being the next Avery/Cooke.

It’s always funny seeing Avery’s named thrown around with the likes of Cooke, Carcillo and such.  Other than for his mouth, I don’t remember him ever getting suspended or fined for a dirty hit.  I’ll bet you those of you who like to drop his name so much can’t name an incident either.

You know, I have had a full day of knocking trollish comments out of the park, and I come to KK for some smart to end my day, and I find this “RealMK” espousing the same dumba$$ BS.

Enough.  Just say I am a Canuck hater and I don’t understand hockey instead there buddy.

Some colour for your crazy picture

1- Really?  Do you understand what these guys do to come back from an injury?  Sami has had a lot of them ( my fave was getting bit by the only poisonous snake in Finland on a golf course !), but is one of the most honorable and classy players in the NHL. He has had about 250ish PIMs while playing over 3 times as many games, in a Top 4 level usually, or even Top 2. Did I miss where YOU were in the NHL there big fella?  Salo is a warrior for all the battling he has come back from, and blaming the victim is what punk bullies do anyhow.
2- what is wrong with you people? Does Boston not have a guy that throws a hip check?  Boynton does right?  The puck son, the puck.  Face up son, meet them face up like men.  That was there too.  Its called hitting in the NHL, and it was right in front of a ref when you say they were calling everything…which brings us to #3
3-Is math an elective in Boston. The power plays were 7-7.  The 5 on 3 counts as 2, and the 5 minute counted as three because they scored twice on it. Learn how they keep a stat sheet in the NHL.  Your team had three straight PPs to end the game, including one in the final 30 seconds for falling on the puck ( he did sweep it under himself there )
4 - Serious? If there were, those Canadian fans that did cheer for Boston wont be back.  You guys whine too much. This game went a long way to show you folks for the bullyish whiners and spoiled brats you are.  One team stood up, matched everything your punk team tried to throw at them, and did not back down.  They gave a blueprint to the East on how you beat a bully.  Call him on his cowardice, because that is what most bullies are, scared little boys inside.
5- lastly, because I can see that you have the homophobia going, and what is the point when a person will actually go there, but that is Back to Back Art Ross Trophy and the reigning Lindsay Award winner and the previous season’s Hart winner.  two guys that play the game the right way.  Two of the classiest and most honorable players in the league.  You are not weak if you don’t fight.  It is tougher still to stand up to every one of these moronic attacks and WIN THE GAME.  You guys got the 7th win last year.  Congrats.  But that was then.  You do know that the Twin that got flipped there ( on a play along the boards that was dirtier still for that ) went on the power play because he got a penalty for that moronic behaviour right?

The Bruins won a war of attrition and all that. TT and the PK deserve far more credit than this misplaced desire to attribute it to toughness.

BTW- 4 for “11” ( actually 7, remember ) on the PP, and 0-7 for the Broons on the PP….so keep taking the dumb penalties.  Better hope the goalies are always as good as Timmy was in the Final.  B/C your team will be getting a ton of them.

Sorry folks for the length.  This guy needed some learnin’ damnit!

They don’t have to.

He’s the poster boy for “Doesn’t get it, doesn’t ever learn”.  That’s all you need to know.  Doesn’t need to be for dirty hits or suspensions.

Marchand is dirty as $&%^&.  That’s saying something considering some of the guys on his team, but he tops them all easily.  He’s got a real problem now going forward, and so do the Bruins…

Sweet DUDE, does all of your “knocking trollish comments out of the park” include the bullshit “you can’t say anything because you aren’t in the NHL” argument?

“Kid is talented but he’s en route to being the next Avery/Cooke.”

Avery’s a clown, but beyond diving, chirping and crying to the media, none of which is dirty, exactly, he doesn’t do anything to be put in a category with Cooke, Carcillo, Marchand or whoever. Worst things I can remember from him was a half-hearted retaliatory slew foot on Crosby where he twisted his own ankle and a sucker punch at some slovakian guy who had just tried to start a fight with him to fight him (it missed). Avery’s either not inclined to hurt people or he’s terrible at it.

Deserves to be grouped with the Burrowses (or the browns, maybe) of the world, not the Suttons.

Avery doesn’t learn not to put his foot in his own mouth in the post-game interview = Carcillo doesn’t learn not to put Gilbert in the infirmary on a dump-in. Uh, okay.
