Ducks forward Jason Blake was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange and was in need of sutures Friday night after suffering what was described as a severe cut on his left forearm late in the team’s 1-0 victory over the San Jose Sharks at Honda Center.
Blake, 38, was injured almost midway through the final period of the Ducks’ home opener. He was taken out of the arena on a special stretcher that allowed him to keep his arm upright as he was sitting, not lying on his back, a team spokesman said.
Blake had lined up on the left wing for a faceoff and a few seconds later fell to the ice as bodies got tangled. While he was down, his forearm was inadvertently slashed by the right skate of San Jose defenseman Brent Burns. Replays show Blake, on his knees, trying to rise and calling toward the bench for help about 9 minutes and 20 seconds into the period.
[Update 11:10 p.m.: Team spokesman Alex Gilchrist said shortly after 11 p.m. that doctors were examining Blake’s wrist to determine what will happen next. Gilchrist said he anticipated having a progress report early Saturday.
