Video- Evander Kane Called For Goalie Interference

Al Montoya left the game and Kane received 2 for goalie interference.

A follower on twitter told me he compares it to the Tootoo hit on Miller.  What do you think?

Looks like Ruff was right, it IS open season on goaltenders. This isn’t a particularly egregious case, as it does look like Kane made a nominal effort to avoid Montoya at the last minute by moving to Montoya’s left (though it doesn’t help Kane’s case that he catches Montoya across the mask with his stick). But it does seem like the floodgates were opened with Lucic’s blatant and totally unnecessary blasting of Miller. Don’t see how Shanahan doesn’t give Kane at least a game based on the Tootoo incident, but he really opened a Pandora’s box with his inaction earlier in the season.

As a side note - with all the criticism the Sabres took for not going after Lucic, will we see the same criticism of the Isles? Looks like no one made any effort to get after Kane following the hit.

In the third period Matt Martin laid a relatively big open ice hit on Kane and hit Burmistrov pretty good twice as well.

it looks less like interference than it does charging, but still.

Looks to me like he had the angle across the front of net until the defenseman took him out and into the net.. Both guys were doing their jobs. I don’t know how you can call that a penalty.

If the referee missed him getting bumped by the d-man I could see the penalty, but I see nothing warranting a suspension.

I watched that game and the so called “hit” would not have happened if the defenceman had not hit Kane into the goalie. It seems that the trend for the defencemen now is to knock down a guy that clearly has you beat and claim goalie interference. Kane tried to avoid hitting him even after he was pushed into him. Kane’s reaction said it all. The accountability of the defencemen is not taken into account on these hits. This seems to be the hot topic and a trend now…similar to the way the hits from behind are being treated. When I was a kid playing hockey, the first thing the coaches drilled into us was to keep our heads up and never face the boards with your head down. However, that is another topic of discussion.
