This is how the league instills parity in the league. By laying off calls on struggling teams, and teams obviously out classed by others, they allow these teams to gain points in the standings so league officials can sit back at the end of the year, point to the small point spread from 1st to 15th in the standings, and say “look at how close everyone was. There must be parity with numbers like that.”
Not much different than how teams that barely creep into the playoffs can all of the sudden become unbeatable, because the league changes the way they call the games so much from the regular season, that these teams can now get away with murder and thrive. But the underdog story makes for great publicity.
