The “No apparent injury” bullet point rubs me the wrong way, but I think 3 games is fair.

I don’t think Stewart was hitting Kronwall to hurt him.

That said, there was also no point whatsoever in Stewart hitting him.  He could not knock Kronwall off the puck WITHOUT him going into the boards like that.  Therefore, regardless of the contact he could not justify, because there simply should not have been any since he could see the “55”.

It was careless and reckless, so 3 games seems about right.

I don’t care for the implication that it could have been more if Kronwall was injured though.  That should not ever play any role into the legality of a check.

I agree.  These two don’t really jibe.  But, good job Shanny nonetheless.

Totally agree with you on this point Primis. Its like having different penalties for murder and attempted murder, which is like saying “come back when you get it right”.

I don’t think Stewart was hitting Kronwall to hurt him.

This I have to completely disagree with however. This argument is the reason that this crap continues year after year. What was his intent if not to injure? He had absolutely NO chance of getting anywhere near the puck and this was not a bang bang play. For god sakes he followed him all the way across the ice! This was either clear disregard for another human beings health and welfare or a deliberate attempt to injure someone. Either way it amounts to the same thing. When I first started watching hockey religiously(1985) this play simply did not happen. In my first ten years watching hockey I probably saw ten boarding calls, now its ONCE A GAME. Letting these players off the hook by qualifying every statement with “I dont think he meant to hurt him” stops the dialog from evolving naturally to “why the f*ck would he do that”, with obvious answer being “because he doesn’t give crap about anyone but himself”. I think Stewart did this on purpose with no other intent than to drive Kronwall face first into the boards, knowing full well what could happen if he did. If we start being honest about what is obvious perhaps some of these players would be shamed into act responsibly on the ice.
