Video- Bad Hit By Matthias?

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,

Devils coach Pete DeBoer said defenseman Anton Volchenkov suffered ““a pretty serious cut, 10-12 stitches” on his face on the hit by Florida’s Shawn Matthias in the first period of tonight’s 4-3 loss to the Panthers.

Volchenkov was not available to the media postgame, but the Devils said Volchenkov suffered a cut to the lip and had a bloody forehead, apparently from when he hit the ice.

Ilya Kovalchuk, who immediately went after Matthias to stick up for his teammate, thought it was a hit to the head that should be looked at by the NHL.

The hit takes place in the very beginning of this game recap video…

I agree with the commentator.
It was a clean hit. Shoulder hit the chest and it was from directly in front of volchenkov. Nothing to see here, please move along.

Looks to me like he got his chin, actually.  It’s hard to tell with the angle, but I’m pretty sure he got his chin.

Although, it is definitely possible that he got the gash from hitting his face on the ice or his stick as he landed.  It’s pretty clear that he landed hard.
