Video- Another Elbow To The Head?

from Katie Carerra of Capitals Insider,

Near the midway point of the third period of Washington’s 3-1 win over the Flames on Tuesday, Nicklas Backstrom skated through the neutral zone, passed the puck to a teammate and then was elbowed in the head by Calgary’s Rene Bourque.

After Bourque struck Backstrom on the left side of his jaw, Backstrom skated toward the boards and leaned over into the space between the benches, then proceeded to the Capitals’ bench. He hunched over as he talked to head athletic trainer Greg Smith and a few teammates, but returned to the ice for the start of the power play that resulted from the elbowing minor Bourque received.

Backstrom took part in that shift on the power play and two more before he left the game with 3 minutes 19 seconds remaining in the third period.

“We removed him from the game, it was precautionary,” Coach Dale Hunter said. “He was getting evaluated right now. We’ll know more tomorrow.”

Rene Bourque was suspended two games for his hit to the head of Duncan Seabrook about a month ago.

This should be about a five-gamer…at least.

One of a handful of bonehead plays by Bourque in the game last night. The kid has talent but he’s lazy and doesn’t backcheck. Hope we trade him in the next 7 weeks but if he gets another suspension (likely) it will be hard to showcase his skills…

Ridiculous. You can see Backstrom even edge away and Bourque stick his elbow out even further. Should be 5 games at least. Hope Backstrom’s back before then.

5 games?  This should be 20.  Not kidding.  This was bad.  There is no better example of what the NHL wants to eliminate without any evidence of or reasoning to suggest that Borque was attempting something other than trying to injure here.

Did Matt Cooke kill someone on the ice last season?  How does he get 20 games—7 of which are playoffs, and no one else even gets close to that.  Cookes elbow in the rangers game last season was bad, but there has defintely been worse this year…

This was just a good clean Canadian hockey hit.  This is how you play hockey.
You know what the worst part of the previous two sentences is?  It’s that some idiots out there actually try to make this argument.  They claim the new NHL is a no hit league and a pansy league.  Yep, guess what, I would rather all those no-talent ass clowns like Torres, Carcillo, Cooke, etc are out of the league vs. seeing the real stars on the IR because of b.s. hits like this.  Some half-wit hockey fan on this website actually tried to defend Carcillo’s hit on the Oilers defenseman the other night.  Unbelievable!

Clearly the short suspensions are not getting through to players, time for some lengthier suspensions.

Wow.  Didn’t just lead with elbow to the head, but actually blatantly elevated his elbow to prepare for it.

Premeditated.

Give him 10 at least.

For hits like this, the NHL needs to force a mandate down the PA’s throat that states the hitter is also 100% liable and responsible for every single cent of any treatment the hitee requires.

That on top of any fines and or lost wages incurred as a penalty.

I’d rather make the organization of the hitter responsible.

Maybe teams will stop employing cheap-shot artists when they start costing the organization twice their salary in medical bills.

Rene Bourque gets FIVE games for his flagrant elbow to Backstrom’s jaw.

Excerpt:

Bourque is classified as a repeat offender under the league’s CBA and will forfeit US$203,252.05 in salary.

Holy shit, that’s a lot of loonies.
