There have been many instances in which we have seen the courage and unyielding integrity of the journalistic professional come to the aid of the people of the world without a voice, those in war torn areas where journalists stood amid the shelling and gunfire to lift the veil of darkness and secrecy so that the story could be told and the world could intervene. Still many more cases of even the local reporter who helped stop those trying to take advantage of the less fortunate and those who are unable to defense themselves. Journalists have and do in many cases create a shield for those who are subject to bullying and unwarranted attacks from others. But then there are those, those who hide like cockroaches in the dark and use the cover of journalism to do nothing more than promote and draw attention to themselves by attempting to cause harm to others. I have read enough of it in the last 24 hours on one target in particular that I was unwilling to sit in the dark myself while the cockroaches scurry about.

Their target; Mr. Burke of the Toronto Maple Leafs and worse, his family. Now first, this is not a man that needs me, nor others to protect him. He is a big boy well educated and well versed in dealing with the attention that comes with a very public professional life. Nor does he need or I suspect want someone to fight his battles when it comes to defending his record and skills as a hockey executive, again I am sure he can find the words for those who attack his talent in that regard, or perhaps he carry borrow from Patrick Roy and simply stuff his Stanley Cup and Calder Cup rings in his ears and ignore the comments from the masses who assume they can and would be better suited for his job.

That said, I have read with great disdain the drivel that has led to even “mainstream” media feeling the need to comment on rumours and innuendo on his personal life, marriage, wife, children and all manner of things that if they were spoken of each of us we would likely revert to our own inner truculence and seek out the nose of those who dare to invade our personal lives in such a manner. I certainly think I would be tempted. Mr. Burke is not a politician we do not get to vote for him based upon his character or what happens in his private life (and yes even public figure should be allowed a private life). He is the General Manager and President of a hugely popular and profitable hockey club, nothing more, or less. Imagine going to your own job and having to respond to daily suggestions about your private life that are being posted on-line.

The common retort for those creating or maintaining such rumours is that they have a “inside source” of course unnamed and with nothing more than conjecture and innuendo we are left to assume that this source is somehow either that closely connected to Mr. Burke that they have information others do not, and are willing to share it (a stretch one would think) or perhaps they are simply clairvoyant and their special powers are what give rise to the “inside information”. Interesting in one blog report the so called journalist who spoke of this had as his only defense that the readers should “read between the lines” in response to someone having the audacity of questioning the veracity of his information. Again, no facts, no names, no sources, in grade school we would not have been allowed to submit a basic research paper that poorly substantiated, yet the ease of the internet allows for the focus to be the rumour and not the veracity or credibility of the author or their writings.

This then leads to the supposed big boys of the reporting world weighing in as did the Toronto Sun’s super sleuth. His manner of rebuking the rumour mongering was to in essence, spread it but with a slight ‘tisk tisk’ along the way. Despite his “knowing” about the interworking of another man’s marriage (again hard to believe as most of us have only a base level understanding of the workings of our own marriages) the Sun’s reporter goes on at length about what implications it may or may not have on the job status of Mr. Burke.

Enough. If those in the world of journalism want to continue to be allowed to rely on protected unnamed sources than perhaps let them stick to reporting on matters of importance and of integrity. It’s shameful that a man with so little free time who has devoted such a large amount of it to trying to help end bullying in our school system, to removing barriers from sports so that they are open to all people regardless of sexual orientation and has flown half way around the world to the front lines in a war zone just to shake hands with our men and women in the military with the hope that it might brighten their day to have someone say thank you for your sacrifice, is then forced to have his family read about their personal lives in the papers or see it on television.

So to the cowards who hide behind rumours and veiled innuendos and lob attacks at people they know nothing about, and to those who aid in the story becoming much more than it ever deserved to be by further commenting, enough. The world has more than it’s share of real news worthy matters, there are millions of people around the globe that could use your keen journalistic insight and assistance to help tell their stories. Let’s elevate the discourse shall we, let’s aim for something slightly higher than a playground mentality where we all stand by the teeter totters and ask one and other if we’ve heard the latest tall tale. Let’s act like adults so that the real children on the playground have a better example to follow.

Oh, and for those who still want to know all about Mr. Burke’s private life, I suggest you take your notebook and pencil and sit across the table from him and ask him directly….

Thank you
