Versteeg Now A Flyer

via Bob McKenzie tweet,

TOR trades Kris Versteeg to PHI for two draft picks, including a first rounder.

The picks are a first and third according to another tweet from Bob.

added 6:44pm, (Philadelphia) - The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have acquired 5-10, 182-pound right wing Kris Versteeg from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a first-round and a third-round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, according to general manager Paul Holmgren.

“Kris is an exciting young forward,” Holmgren said.  He’s 24 years old and he’ll fit in with our group of players here.  He’s a quality forward that can play in a lot of different roles for our hockey team. He can move up and down our lineup. He can kill penalties. He can play on the power play.  We think he’s a guy that over the last few years, particularly in Chicago, has really blossomed into a good forward and we think he’s going to be a really good addition to our team.”

“Right away I was extremely excited to join this team,” Versteeg said.  “They’ve had a lot of success this season.  They had a great playoff push last year and I’m excited to try and have a good one this year.  I like to make plays and score goals at the same time, maybe go out there and be an agitator at times too. I’m going to try and do it all and have fun doing it.”

I think that is pretty good value for Versteeg.  A 1st and a 2nd isn’t chump change…

Hmm, so I guess the lines will now be:

JVR - Richards - Versteeg
Leino - Briere - Hartnell
Carter - Giroux - Zherdev
Powe - Betts - Nodl/Carcillo/Shelley

Sounds like a good line-up to me

Where’s the $$$ coming from?  I thought they were RIGHT up against the cap ceiling…and they didn’t trade away any contracts.

Stunned.

Team. To. Beat.  In the East, anyway.

PuckHound, that’s true, but the Flyers reality is the Richards line isn’t really a top-line, it’s really their third line, but Laviolette always puts Richards out there against the other teams top line.

Flashtastic, they waived Leighton and Walker which freed up $3.2M, I think, giving them almost $3.6M to play with, give or take

Richards, Giroux, Carter, Hartnell, Zherdev, Briere, Leino

You can drop Zherdev and leino under Versteeg. Zherdev is a piece of shiat just like he was in NY and Columbus. Leino is streaky and has done well only for a few stretches this year. People rate him higher because of last play-offs performance. Versteeg should get top 2 line time.

Ah…I forgot about Leighton.

They’ve got some crazy forward depth, now.  Better than just about every team in the league.

Completely unexpected trade.  It appears to help the Flyers immediately and proves that the Leafs are in a selling mode.  Kaberle?  Lebda (snickers)???

But I’m sure Eklund is saying some retarded shit like, “I wrote about this trade ten months ago!  Now pay me, you suckers.”

Good Lord, the Flyers are stacked. Best team in the East by far.

And they’re almost totally set up for next year, too—17 players (10 forwards, 6 defensemen and a goalie) under contract at $57.5 million, which means they’ll have about $4.5 million or so to spend on probably 2-3 cheap forwards, a No. 7 d-man and a backup goalie.

The only “core” player unsigned (not counting Zherdev, who seriously won’t be missed) is Ville Leino; the Flyers can either let him walk or peddle someone else (Versteeg? Hartnell? One of Coburn/Carle/Meszaros?) and find a cheaper replacement. They probably won’t be quite as deep, but still an elite team for sure.

This is no one-and-done, please-please-please-win-the-Cup-this-year, Chicago-style cap disaster. The Flyers are built to win now and win in the future. That’s damn impressive.

Honestly, I think Burke got decent return, in theory anyways.  That’s 2 chances at a future NHL youngster, for a current NHLer that may be overrated and isn’t helping them right now anyways.

Leafs will just screw it up anyways and draft two busts with them, but…  I’m a little taken aback that someone gave Burke a 1st and a 3rd (in this coming draft) for them.

It was a first and third.  The idea is that it could end up almost looking like a high 2nd and high 4th round pick.

The only question, did the Flyers give up their 3rd round pick or did they trade Pittsburgh’s 3rd round pick from the Hamhuis deal?
