Various Shades of Sean Avery

Craig Custance at Sporting News reflects on a Day-with-Avery he had in 2008:

There was the trash-talking Sean Avery, who joined a morning radio show and instantly ripped the hosts doing the interviewing.

“This is the worst-dressed radio station I’ve seen,” he said on-air moments after sitting down in studio. “You guys are disgusting.”

But there was also a visit to the children’s ward of a local hospital and his interaction with kids was just as effortless as the beer drinking with teammates.

Between each stop, we’d sit for a couple minutes, I’d pull out my recorder and we’d talk. I knew there were layers there, and as much as a hockey writer can, I tried to peel them back.

There was certainly more to Avery than he let on, than he showed hockey fans. There was something underneath this exterior image he was crafting.

“That’s the whole secret,” he said at the time. “That’s what you’re not going to get out of me. Who knows? I could be a hardcore Christian. I could be gay. I could be a singer-songwriter. It’s all up in the air at this point.”
