Vanek Takes A Slash To The Knee Today

Word is he will not return to the game today after taking this slash from Johnny Boychuk.

added 2:35pm, Looking at the video again, he may have also hurt his left leg/ankle when sliding into the boards.  Sabres are just saying lower-body injury.

Gime a break…the guy had a breakaway. Any Dman slashes the shooter in that situation. Could have been a penalty for tripping….A slash to the leg ain’t going to hurt anyone. They wear shin pads don’t they? The crash into the boards hurt Vanek. He was going into the boards one way or another. No way you let him walk in all alone. He has to be taken out in that situation…The Bruins have been without Marc Savard for two months due to a cheap shot. Vanek should probably consider himself lucky that is only his leg. Vanek cheap shotted Wheeler in game one from behind. What goes around comes around….......

I did not really notice the slash until I watched the replay this morning. Definitely a solid two handed hack caught the “side” of his knee where there is little protection. You can clearly see the leg buckle inward at impact from the slash most likely causing him to collapse into the boards. I very much doubt Boychuk had any intent to injure. Just a wreck-less play out of desperation.

I agree there was no intent to injure. However, I read on another post some idiot saying it was clearly an attempt at the puck. Only if the puck was at knee height. It was definitely a desperation, cheap shot because you just got beat. He did not expect Vanek to hurt his ankle going into the boards.

By my own rules (contrary to the NHL idiocy that they call justice), you cannot punish by the outcome (injury), you must punish the action. Even though the blind refs thought it was a hook, it was a penalty, and that got called. I called for suspension last night, while still being very angry about the outcome.

It just sucks that Vanek got hurt just when he was playing like the Vanek of the last two seasons!
