After listening to the interview, Gillis should be let go today.

He basically threw Tortorella under the bus, should have never brought this up.

Makes me glad to be a fan of a far more well run organ-i-zation.

TSN has much more on this if you did not listen to the interview…

“John is a proven winner and competitor,” said Gillis. “The running of this team is my responsibility and I feel that the last few seasons we have been chasing goal posts that have been moving and got away from our core principles of how I want this team to play and how we want to perform and the tempo we want to play with.

“People want someone to blame but the reality is that as an organization we have deviated from things that have been successful and I know will be successful. We will get back to those levels and that style of play that we started six years ago and we have the personnel to do it.”

Gillis added that believes that the system in place is solid enough for any coach to find success, but acknowledges that the Canucks’ failures this season are broad.

“If given the resources and the players are committed to it, any coach can coach the team that he has,” explained Gillis. “But having said that, our problems are far reaching and will be addressed. If people don’t want to get onside with how I view this team and how it’s supposed to play then they won’t be here.”

Gee, it’s almost as if Tortorella’s well-established approach to how hockey should be played has come as a big surprise to Gillis. If he didn’t want his team to play that style, maybe he should have hired someone else.

Exactly OTC, he knew exactly what he was getting and I recall him saying he wanted the Canucks to play a tougher, more grinding type of game.

Now, not so much.  He needs to go.

The comments seem to echo rumors that ownership pushed the Torts hiring on Gillis. Either way, I think it’s time for a fresh start in VAN, starting with the GM.

If Gillis goes, I won’t be the least surprised if the ‘Nucks will take a look at the Wings’ AGM Ryan Martin.  Or AGM Julian Brisebois from TBL.

Remind me again whose job it is to keep the organization on track.

Sportsnet’s Hockey Central @Noon guys discussed this topic too and wondered why Gillis would speak out now.

Watch/listen here.

What compelling reason would there be for any other team to pursue Martin?  I’m sincerely asking…

So here in Vancouver it’s widely believed that Torts was hired by the owner over Gillis’s objections and that the Aquilinis are very hands on with the team. The speculation is that Gillis was essentially saying that he’d played ball with the owners to disastrous result and he would now either run the team his way or be on his way.
Plenty of arguments are being made that 1 or both should be fired but from a business point of view it’s likely Torts that goes. It’s 8 million to fire Torts, 16 to fire both. Generally if your bringing in a new GM he wants his own hire as coach so keeping Torts and firing Gillis seems unlikely.
My guess is Torts goes and Gillis stays and hires who he reportedly wanted in the first place, John Stevens in L.A.

Interesting VS.

Toronto radio meanwhile tossing around Jay Feaster’s name as GM for the Canucks and keeping Tortorella since they have worked together in the past in Tampa.

While he’s not Jim Nill or even Joe McDonnell and even though he’s been primarily the team’s capologist (same as Brisebois), he has a good background in scouting.

“He’s been giving them some evaluations on the fringes,” said Red Wings GM Ken Holland. “He’s not part of any committee or something. They’ve asked him for player assessments around our area. He went to Lake Placid last year and this year it happens that Canada is there with the U.S., Sweden and Finland. These are things that Ryan was doing in the past.

“It’s an opportunity for him to watch four countries. Most of those players are drafted. It’s an opportunity for him to build relationships and gather information.”

The guy networks really well and those can translate into getting possibly good draft picks if the ‘Nucks want to reboot their team.

I’d also mention that the owners involvement is speculated to have affected much of the trading or lack there of since the cup run.
