USA Eliminated In Men’s Hockey At The Olympics

GANGNEUNG, South Korea — Ryan Donato (Scituate, Mass.) and Jim Slater (Lapeer, Mich.) scored, but the U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team fell to the Czech Republic, 3-2, in a shootout here today in the quarterfinals of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games at the Gangneung Hockey Centre.

“The one thing that we wanted to make sure of when we came into this tournament is that when it ended we’d be proud of how we represented our country,” said Tony Granato, head coach of the U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team. “I’m very proud of how we competed and how we played and how we represented our country from the start of the tournament to the end of it."

Never, EVER send a group of mostly-washed-up guys again.

The NCAAers were the ones doing the heavy lifting on the team every…. single… game.  May as well name mostly NCAAers or juniors with a few vets sprinkled through next time there’s no NHLers.

I think this will go down as the Olympics of what if. All the old dudes did Jack all for the u.s.

If Canada and the u.s. are eliminated I expect the NHL to pull their head out of Gary’s rear end to see nhlers for 2022.

The quality of play overall has been fine.  USA was just garbage because they named too many garbage players.  USA could have named a better team, even without NHLers.  A guy like Wisniewski had no business at al being there.  He’s so terrible they couldnt even trust him at Even Strength and were only using him on the PP.  He literally was getting no ES ice time.

I don’t care about the NHLers.  Stopping the season so they can play, and risk injury mid-season, is honestly really stupid.

If the Olympics want NHLers, they could always move hockey to the Summer Games.  But they won’t.  Just learn from the mistakes and name a much younger, hungrier USA team next time.  I’d LOVE to see a vet-laden Team Canada of KHLers and other overseas players go up against a team of NCAA, junior, and say ECHLer Americans.  I bet the youth/speed/etc would give them fits.

Team USA management seemed to miss the mark, again when selecting the team.  The team was overloaded with ineffective veteran players.  Not to worry, the NHL will be back in 2022.  Gary and Co. seem to like that market. And given how lackluster this tournament has been I think the IOC/IIHF will be motivated to work out a deal.

Granato with, “im proud of how we represented our country from the beginning to the end”... Where are you really from, Granato?

Anyone notice how empty the arena was for the US game? This tournament in general has been so much more boring than the past ones. What a waste of an event.

I did TK, announced crowd was 2948.

The Canada/Finland game this morning wasn’t much better.

Last night’s game was actually quite exciting, and team USA had some really close chances that could have ended the game. It was a shame it had to end in a shootout. The OT was incredibly fast-paced.

People can talk all the smack they want about this team, but those guys skated their hearts out last night and nearly made it to the medal round.
