Under Pressure Before The Season Starts

from Kevin Allen of USA TODAY,

Here is a list of NHL people facing added pressure heading into the start of the 2017-18 season. (Opening night is Oct. 4.)

Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland

Holland is one of the league’s most respected general managers.

But many in his fan base have turned on him because of the perception that the Red Wings lack promise and they have too many "bad" contracts undermining the team’s effort to rebuild.

Winnipeg Jets coach Paul Maurice

The Jets have an impressive collection of young players, and they seem poised to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2014-15.

Interesting, he doesn’t think Blashill is on the hot seat.

I really like Kevin Allen a lot, but I do find his phrasing here a bit odd.

“But many in his fan base have turned on him because of the perception that the Red Wings lack promise and they have too many “bad” contracts undermining the team’s effort to rebuild.”

“Because of the perception”?  It’s not just the “fan base” that has this “perception”.  A lot of professional hockey writers also have this “perception”, because, it’s more of reality-based facts than it is a bunch amateurs’ “perception”.  If Kevin Allen can make a case for the Wings actually having promise and not having too many bad contacts, by all means, please make it.  I could use a little hope.

I thought the same.  No need to put quotation marks around the word bad.  Kevin is one of my favorites but I think he’s a bit off on this.

What about this BS about “the team’s efforts to rebuild”? Part of the reason fans are turning on him is because he actively isn’t making any efforts to rebuild.

Blash will be sacrificed long before Holland has to take any heat for his poor decisions.

Beat me to it, Ajax. Saying that the team lacks promise and those bad contracts are just our “perception,” is like saying that we all “perceive” that the sun comes up in the east. We aren’t “perceiving” anything. The reality of those two situations is right out there for everyone to plainly see.
