UFAs At The Trade Deadline

from Chris Stevenson of the Ottawa Sun,

There are some interesting potential free agents out there as the deadline approaches including forwards Jarome Iginla of the Calgary Flames, Mike Ribeiro of the Washington Capitals and defenceman Mark Streit of the New York Islanders, but the problem as the trade deadline nears is going to be separating the buyers from the sellers. With teams playing just a 48-game schedule there is not going to be the same kind of separation you would have near the end of an 82-game schedule.

Another possibility is Pittsburgh Penguins defenceman Kris Letang. He’s got one year left on his contract after this season and is due for a big raise from his current deal, which carries a cap hit of $3.5 million. With centre Evgeni Malkin also coming up as a potential UFA after next season, is Penguins general manager Ray Shero going to be able to keep everybody happy?

If or when the Penguins might contemplate moving a guy like Letang, the price tag is expected to be a top six winger, an everyday defenceman and a prospect.

why on earth would Shero resign Malkin, as good as he is, over Letang (assuming he can’t sign both)? They already have a perennial Hart contender at forward in Crosby and Letang is apparently a perennial Norris candidate. I would think having that kind of balance would be the priority. It’s just not that easy to acquire Norris caliber d-men. Though I say this without knowing all that much about the Penguins defensive prospects and if there’s any obvious #1 dmen in the pipeline. Either way, unless there’s some major character flaws I don’t know about, I’d be shocked if he let Letang walk.

Filppula, White and Cleary for Letang.

Throw in Abdelkader and Sammy and I’d be all for it.

Done.  But it’s got to be for Letang and a conditional 7th rounder.  If Abdelkader scores while playing on Pittsburgh’s second line then the Wings get the pick.

Because while Letang is wondrously talented player, hockey sense wise he is a window licker!! he destroys the PP when he is on it because doesn’t make quick decisions & passes & gets almost every shot blocked
