Typical Burke Response

from Ken Campbell of The Hockey News,

Only someone of Brian Burke’s ilk would see the possible extinction of one-dimensional enforcers like Colton Orr from the NHL as “a dangerous time in our game,” and one that, “makes me sick to my stomach.”

What should have Burke’s stomach churning even more is that he so badly misread where the game was going that by the end of next season he will have paid $4 million to a player who has been, for all intents and purposes, utterly useless as an NHL player. In his 133-game career with the Maple Leafs, Orr has averaged just 6.1 minutes per game in ice time. This season he played just five games and a total of 22 minutes and 24 seconds, roughly what teammates Dion Phaneuf and Carl Gunnarsson play in one game.

But instead of acknowledging his mistake, Burke instead unleashed his venom on the direction of the game and the insidious “rats” he claims are ruining the sport. If only players such as Orr, who cleared waivers and will likely never play in the NHL again, were permitted to plod around the ice, all would be well in the world.

This is my favorite quote from the article:

What [Burke] conveniently forgets, again, is that in the vast majority of cases, players in this day and age cannot apply a clean, hard, open-ice hit to an opponent without having to answer the bell by fighting one of the aggrieved player’s teammates. Using Burke’s logic when it comes to fighting, wouldn’t that mean nobody would hit anybody because they have to fight every time they do?

Great point.

Burke just crossed the kook line.
Addressing his bizarre logic would take half a day, and very few readers need any help shaking their head at this.

Eh. Burke has a point. The majority of enforcers don’t skate well enough or play often enough to injure people throughout the course of play, even if they were inclined to, which most of them are not. For every Shelley, there are a dozen Parroses; sideshow fighters with non-fighting bodycounts of zero. It’s not like there are 30 NHL goal-scorers in the AHL who will play for the 600k goons get, so the jobs they lose are inevitably going to go to Rinaldo//Sestito/Torres/CarcilLOL run around hitting people and nothing else types, who DO skate well enough to hurt people and have no qualms at all about doing so.

The goon’s pointless (Jody, I’d go you if you had any impact on the game, but you don’t. you’re ******* irrelevant—Mike Rupp saying what goons probably hear 20 times a game) and a seriously unhealthy and unfair thing to ask some bi,g awkward 16 year old kid to start doing, don’t get me wrong. But that doesn’t mean the replacement player won’t be worse for player safety, because he will.

Tell me honestly, is there anyone at all who thinks there will be less guys on the IR with one more Kaleta and one less Orr in the NHL?

Sorry, that’s absolutely untrue.  Having a player who wants to play hockey and will bust his ass to try and make a team is always going to be better “for player safety” than some guy who’s never going to try to be a better player because all he’s needed for his to “stir the pot”.

Jesus, when Ken Campbell calls someone off their rocker and I agree with him… that’s just sad.  Because Campbell is usually off his own rocker.

Burke is so out of touch with reality.  That the Leafs employ him—and Leaf fans love him and continue to have misguided faith in him—is just a testament to how pathetic things are in TO right now, and how out of touch the majority of Leaf fans have gotten with the game.

@Garth       the type of player who’s not already in the league on merit and will bust his ass for the 600k Goons get will play hockey by running around like a jackass trying to clobber people. Colton Orr was useless, but useless is safer than a guy who just runs people. You’re really trying to tell me that hockey’s safer because the spot philly used to give to guys like Riley Cote went to Zac rinaldo? Or because Rob Ray’s post-retirement roster spot went to friggin Kaleta?
