from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,
Tim Gleason was high on Philadelphia’s list of possible defensemen for purchase but that won’t happen now with the Carolina Hurricanes re-signing him Monday.
So what now for Philadelphia?
One name to keep an eye on is veteran blueliner Hal Gill in Montreal. He’s slated to be an unrestricted free agent July 1 and, from what I was told Tuesday, the Flyers covet his experience—he’s won a Cup—as well as his shot-blocking and penalty killing abilities. The Habs aren’t ready to pull the plug just yet on their season, but if and when they do, expect the Flyers to inquire about him.
Another possibility for the Flyers is Nicklas Grossman in Dallas. He’s slated for unrestricted free agency on July 1. The Stars have begun talks on an extension, so that’s another possibility—that he signs like Gleason and stays put….
The Phoenix captain is slated for unrestricted free agency on July 1 and some have wondered if he could become available if the Coyotes fall out of the playoff race.
Not so, GM Don Maloney reiterated Tuesday.
“Shane (Doan) is the soul of this franchise, as long we we’re here and he wants to stay here then he’ll be here,” Maloney told ESPN.com. “I have no question whatsoever that if we get an ownership group in place, then we’ll get a deal done with Shane. He’s not going anywhere, unless of course he came to us and asked us otherwise. He’s still a very good player and we want him here for a few more years….”
more names discussed…
