from William Houston of the Globe and Mail,
TSN beat Sportsnet on the Bill Guerin trade to San Jose Sharks from St. Louis Blues. It was also the first to nail the Martin Biron deal from Buffalo to Philadelphia earlier in the morning.
While TSN giving us the goods on the trade involving Guerin, the big fish in yesterday’s derby, Sportsnet was attempting to convey a party atmosphere replete with balloons, models and pizza.
Up against TSN’s breaking news on Guerin, Sportsnet aired a feature on Bill Watters reminiscing about the Toronto Maple Leafs’ failed attempt to acquire Eric Lindros several years ago….
The first battle of the trade deadline was fought overnight, beginning with TSN’s Bob McKenzie reporting that Florida Panther Gary Roberts had waived his no-trade clause to join Pittsburgh.
Eklund, the hockey blogger who did some work for Sportsnet yesterday, disputed the report. He posted a message on his blog stating that Roberts had not waived the clause. “Listen, this is the deal, kids,” he told his readers. “I am not an idiot. Do you think I want to post something so contrary to so many people who I respect?”
