Friends and former teammates were struggling Monday to process the news Jordan Boyd, an outwardly healthy 16-year-old hockey player, had collapsed on the ice and died after a skating drill on the first day of tryouts with a major junior team in New Brunswick.
Boyd was pronounced dead at hospital after falling hard to the ice during a workout with the Acadie-Bathurst Titan of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
“From what I understand, he was skating a sprint, from one end of the rink to the other,” league spokesperson Photi Sotiropoulos said. “And as he was skating, he collapsed suddenly and hit the ice. It was a very sudden collapse.”
