Well…at least we didn’t overpay for him.

Steep price.

Why is that a price CGY is paying?  Are they moving a d-man or two themselves then?

Not really an overpayment. There 18 pick will be somewhere between 18-26. And they now have arguably the best defense in the NHL.  Think about that top 4 for a minute. Giordano-Hamilton Hamonic-Brodie.

This is a team that is willing to win now and is proving it.  If I was a Flames fan I’d be very happy with this deal.

Ya, its’ an overpay but there is a time to overpay and this was a good one.  THat top 4 is amazing, and they already have a youngish team up front…. Gaudreau, Mohanan, Bennet, etc….

Calgary is making moves to be (actually) competitive. The cost for defensmen is sky high. So they paid.

Not sure if Mike Smith is the right choice for goalie moving forward, but what other proven starters were out there and available? Fleury & ???

I’m torn on Mike Smith. I’ve seen him have some very good seasons and very bad.  If he can’t cut it in front of this team he’ll never cut it.

He was almost vezina worthy parts of the last 2 years on a crappy Yotes team.  They won several games because of him alone.  Though he’s always struck me as one of those guys that can win 48 save games but struggles in 20 shot games….
Either way, Calgary will be a fun team to watch next year.  Calgary and Nashville (especially if they manage to get Duchene to go with Johansen) will be the favs.  Followed close by Ana and prob Chicago, and Minny

I watched a lot of Flames games last year and I don’t think this team is ready to take the step to the next level. I’m not a huge fan of the Smith acquisition and the Hamonic one is basically sacrificing the future to do it now. Is Hamonic worth it? Not sure, he needs to have a bounce back year but at the very least the contract is good.

Calgary needed to beef up the D, they regularly play Oilers, Ducks and Sharks. They did what they needed to do. That said I agree with those posting on whether Smith is up to the challenge in goal. I like what Coyotes did getting Antti Raanta. Not sold on Smith. I liked him 4 years ago but now not as much… However I think Calgary is doing it right. If they didn’t get past Ducks, then you have to improve your team if you want to go farther next year. Hamonic improves their team. Teams that do nothing usually go farther down in the standings. Not a Calgary fan but I like that they try and improve. I don’t get teams like the Jets who basically go into the season with the same team that failed the year before. At least make an effort to improve. They have some good players but seem to be afraid to make a trade. They only trade they ever made was unloading Kane and that was good. Do some more, it is not like they made the playoffs and they can stand pat…Good for Calgary for actually trying to improve…

That’s a lot to give up for a second or third pairing Dman
