Trade Talk Starting To Surface

from the StarTribune,

Some trade scuttlebutt around the NHL as the draft approaches:

• Colorado: Wants to keep the No. 2 pick but would trade No. 11. Looking for a goaltender (maybe Jonathan Bernier or Cory Schneider).

• Detroit: Could be dangling Jiri Hudler and/or Valtteri Filppula for a puck-moving defenseman to replace retired Brian Rafalski

• Edmonton: Owns the No. 1 overall pick but would like to trade for another top-10 pick. Names available include Ales Hemsky, Tom Gilbert, Sam Gagner and Andrew Cogliano.

Agreed. On the surface of his numbers he hasn’t lived up to his contract, but for people that have watched him game in, game out, he’s been a rock with his two-way game and never takes a shift off. There are only two ways I see him in play—if it allows them to land a big time D (or negotiating rights to one), or if they really thought they could afford Brad Richards.

My thinking is that what they’ll do is talke about Filppula and Hudler and some team will propose “x” trade that includes Filppula and Holland will go “Come on, you want Filppula for that?” and then counter with the same trade except replacing Filppula with Hudler.

I wouldn’t be surprised if both weren’t traded and remained on the team (to my dismay).

Hudler, okay… but why so down on Filppula?

but why so down on Filppula?

I’m not really down on Filppula. He’s a good two-way player with a lot of skill. My opinion is that he is overpaid to be a third line center (because that’s all he really is) so the Wings could get more value/production by getting a true top six forward. I like Fil for our team, just at a lower salary so we can use those resources for better quality higher in the line-up.
Fair?

Filppula is sort of like a Slava Kozlov, although not as streaky. He’s a good two way player with the skill to put up 60-70 points a year but for some reason doesn’t. Confidence might have something to do with it or maybe its his personality to let others take the lead. Yet, his value jumps in the playoffs. They will really miss him next spring if get goes.
