Tough Guy

from Shi Davidi of the CP at the Globe and Mail,

One way or another, the late Bob Probert figured his four children were going to come across the details of his often troubled, sometimes sordid, life….

The brutally frank memoir vividly catalogues his highs and lows, from snorting cocaine he initially dumped into a toilet amid his 1989 arrest for smuggling drugs across the Detroit-Windsor border, to ordering pizzas and cavorting with nurses and other patients during his many trips to rehabilitation centres.

Perhaps the most intimidating enforcer in NHL history, Probert also offers plenty of stories about his on-ice pugilism, using an expletive to describe high-profile rival Tie Domi, while praising Marty McSorley, Stu Grimson and Troy Crowder among others, as honourable fighters.

He also describes NHL commissioner Gary Bettman as “an *#$%@&, a frikkin’ *#$%@&” who has “ruined the game of hockey,” and is “supposed to speak for the good of the league, but in my opinion, he’s strictly behind the owners.” Probert adds how he fooled league-mandated drug testing by providing inspectors with clean urine samples he’d warmed in the microwave.

What has the world come to.  I find this guy pathetic.  If he hadn’t ended up in the NHL he’d have been passed out in some trailer park.  Sorry he died but why do we care about his sordid useless life?

Because he wasn’t passed out in a trailer park, but was instead a very exciting player to watch play the game.

Why care? Because most of us know someone who had what you might term “a sordid, useless life” but were still human beings who, when gone, leave a void. It might be a friend who was the life of the party in college, but alcohol became too much to handle for him, he turned to stronger drugs later, and just dropped out of the lives of the friends who cared about him and tried their best to help. It might be the void left in the life of a parent who loses a son or daughter to suicide after a struggle with mental illness. It might be anyone any of us knows and cares about who struggles with inner demons, might have finally gained some measure of control over them, and then the toxic residue of a life spent in chemical abuse takes away what we considered a friend, father, husband, son, or brother - or mother, wife, daughter, or sister for that matter.

Life for all people is full of struggles, and some of us have an easier time of it than others. Bob Probert did not, which isn’t unusual. The only thing unusual about his fights was that so many more people recognize his name. Most of these battles are fought, and sometimes lost, without the world noticing.

It doesn’t make the life lost less of a tragedy, and it doesn’t make it “useless” any more then your own life is useless.

The word is “empathy” - look it up sometime.

Great I hope your daughter marries a guy just like him.  No wonder everyone thinks hockey fans are morons.
