Too Early To Talk Conn Smythe?

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,

Tuukka Rask didn’t even make it onto the rookie of the year ballot (Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard, Colorado’s Matt Duchene and Buffalo’s Tyler Myers are this year’s finalists), but the Bruins netminder has his eye on another piece of hardware, the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.

more and other observations from last night…

This type of article (like all “early prediction” stories) is the journalistic equivalent of commenting “First!” on a new blog post. I suppose they’re symptomatic of the 24-hour news cycle we enjoy/suffer from nowadays, but I just think they’re tiresome.

Way too early to talk Conn Smythe.  Start talking Conn Smythe after the conference finals are over.

Fourth!... jk.  wink

Agreed, too early to talk about this.  Has anyone ever won the Smythe who didn’t make it out of the conference finals?

On nhl.com, the list of Conn Smythe winners footnotes five from the losing team of the SCF, but there’s no mention of anyone winning who didn’t make the Finals.

Not too surprisingly, four of the five were goalies.
