If the reports are true of Vanek wanting to play in Minnesota, the Islanders gave up a lot for a one-year player.

FYI, Moulson is also UFA this summer.

I don’t get the “Vanek wants to play in MIN” thing.  So he played college there, big whoop.

<NYI> “Hey Thomas.  Sign with us and you can play on John Tavares’ wing”
<MIN?> “Hey Thomas, sign with us and you can play on… uhh…  Mikko Koivu’s wing?”

Unless Minnesota thinks that somehow they’re going to trade for or sign a better top C than Mikko Koivu, I’d say “Edge: NYI”.  The list of more-appealing C’s to play with than Tavares would be pretty short.

I’m not a Moulson fan, and those picks might not be very early in the round if their NYI’s own.  I don’t know about that return…

Isn’t his wife also from there? I think she is so that adds a little to the rumors I suspect, but otherwise I agree, they are just rumors. I don’t think the Isles have the edge though, well, maybe over the Wild, but if he wants to win a cup then he might just want to go the UFA route and sign with the best available option for less money.

Also in terms of value you have to assume Buffalo is going to flip Moulson by the deadline as well so the true return for Vanek isn’t really there yet I suspect. Maybe the Sabres try to resign Moulson but I sort of doubt it.

I agree, a very high price for a free agent.

I think this is correct.

Next up for bids… Ryan Miller, and I can’t believe Steve Ott isn’t being discussed.

Wow, Moulson is a very impressive player. The Isles are nuts

This might be one of the most expensive rentals in the history of the NHL.

Tavares is a whole other level of player compared to Koivu, do *you* even watch hockey?  Koivu wouldn’t be a #1 C on many (maybe even most) teams, Minny’s other C’s are kinda’ terrible (though Granlund has potential).  It’s not that Koivu’s horrible or anything.  That’s like saying Koivu is comparable to Datsyuk cause both are #1 C’s… they’re obviously not, and it’s not even close.  Tavares is probably one of the top 5 C’s in the league, period.

Well, he’s not going to sniff 30G’s this year.  I think you’re going to see he benefited from his situation, and BUF is going to do Not Good things to his numbers and value, and then he may even struggle elsewhere.  I believe he’s an upcoming UFA too.  He’ll have to plead for teams to ignore this year’s numbers.

Where did anyone say they’re the same?  If (and it’s a big if) Vanek wants to play in Minnesota because of non-hockey reason, as is rumoured, then playing with Tavares might not neccesarily be a big draw.  And while Koivu isn’t Tavares, a Koivu-Parise-Vanek line isn’t exactly chopped liver.

If things were as cut and dried as you seem to think they are then the Wings would never had to pitch for a winger because UFAs would be begging to play with Datsyuk.

He’ll have to plead for teams to ignore this year’s numbers.

Yeah, sure he will.

Of course they are different players as Crosby and Zetterberg are, where Tavares is the offensive superstar and Koivu is the do-it-all-every-night under the radar type of player. I’m curious to hear your argument why Koivu isn’t a #1 Center.

Moulson has 6 goals in 11 games. On pace for about 45 goals. I wouldn’t say that is too bad.

I’ve watched the Islanders this year, because, unlike the Red Wings, they are actually fun to watch. Moulson has great hands around the net, and is one of those players that will either find the open space, or create it.

One of my favorite NHL players today.

As long as there is a puck around the net, Moulson will find it and will score his fair share of goals, so don’t expect too big of a drop off. Vanek just adds a different dimension to the attack that the Islanders didn’t have. It is a marginal upgrade for the Isles, but once you get past the 30 goal mark, the price for an increase in skill is exponential.
