im beginning to more i see hits in preseason and i beginning to wonder if the players don’t care what shanny thinks and you are going to see more violent hits.

the real story to come out of that game is that Avery states that he was called homophobic epithet on ice by Simmonds.

Anyone have any idea what this means?

wow, that was f-ing dirty. 20 game ban.  Do the flyers ever get IT?

I understand Avery’s point; that he’s been suspended multiple times for exactly that kind of thing and don’t doubt his sincerity on the topic of homophobia, but if you’re going to suspend Simmonds for trashtalk, where does it stop? Just tonight, I heard Avery, of all people, threaten to ‘kill Giroux if (the referees) don’t get (Sestito) under control’ about 5 times…

On Sestito, this guy must be a complete moron. His teammate was just suspended 10 games for the same hit (actually, I think Sestito’s is worse) 3 days ago. You’d think he’d remember that.

WTF, why are the flyer’s broadcasters trying to gie excuses for the hit!?!?!!?

“he gest excited, hes out there” blah, blah, blah

Just pathetic.. Disgusting
The broadcasters should get a suspension, too…  Jesus

If I were Shanny, I’d be pretty discouraged with all the suspensions and incidents he’s already had to review in his new position. We’re still a week a way from the regular season, and while some learning curve was to be expected, this is ridiculous.

Same methodology as the obstruction crackdown. Seems like way too many calls until the guys stop doing it. Worked once, why not again.

But obstruction fouls don’t put a guys career or even life on the line. The headshots I can understand to a point, but its these boarding calls that are really getting me. It’s not like boarding was slightly more legal in the past. It has always been a dangerous play, and perhaps the most frequently called as a major. They know better.

so fukn dirty
Man I really hate to see shit like this.  Should suspend him, and fine his coach 10k for each head hit or boarding hit that occurred under his watch.  Then you will see it end, or the player in the ahl

It’s not even the hit from behind as much as the force behind the hit. He did come in on a glide but that was after some serious strides to build up speed. If Shelley gets 5 this kid has to get 10 at least, maybe even 15-20.

This crap has to go. Throw the book at this guy Shanny, 20 games or more.

Boarding’s a different animal than headshots because of the timing involved and because what the other guy does is a big factor in if there’s an infraction.

With a headshot, it’s usually (not always, but usually) just a matter of not aiming for the guy’s jaw and keeping your elbows tucked. Great example of this by douglas Murray the other day, where the 6’4 murray scrunched up to make sure he avoided Lapierre’s face. That Lapierre didn’t catch a rule 48 hit was completely at Murray’s discretion (and under his control) and he made the right choice. Wisniewski just lost 700 grand for targeting the head. Other players will notice this. Rule 48 hits could be gone quickly.

With boarding, though, there can be a read involved (not in the Sestito hit, but definitely the Shelley hit was a blown read by Shelley). If the expectation is that the other guy will turn left or something, then he doesn’t, you have an unintentional board take place (99 out of 100, the guy isn’t hurt, either, dangerous as this might be).

The penalty for blowing a read in that situation used to be the same as breaking the other guy’s stick by accident—just 2 minutes in the box. No big deal, really. Now it’s a 5 minute major and a 5 game suspension overnight.

This is a much bigger change than the rule 48 adjustment. Shanny’s asking players to unlearn years of knowledge on how and when to throw a hit. A dozen coaches may have to change their forechecks or, at very least, the expectation of when their players will or won’t finish a check. We’ll see more of these before we see less. But players will adjust. Eventually.

However, this is going to create a new problem: players throwing themselves into the boards to try and draw a suspension from a division rival is about to become a very popular activity.

I guess this falls under the heading “What was he thinking”  I guess these meatheads will finally figure out that these kind of hits are frowned upon.

Avery should not complain about anything.  He has some mouth on him.  Guys go berserk after some of the stuff he says.  So it must be right out of the sewer.  You know “People in glass houses”

This may just be the dirtiest hit of the preseason so far.  I’m really having trouble saying any of the rest of them were worse or were even this bad.

I expect Sestito to sit for a long time.

I agree with J.J.

20 games for that. The momentum he had going into that hit…ridiculous.

As a side note I would have liked to have seen Simmonds beat the piss out of Avery for no reason in particular.

I hate the preseason, Mursak is out just when his big chase came

and this guy Sestito, whatever he probably wouldnt make the Flyers roster anyway,so what good does suspending him do?

Isn’t this the third Flyer to get called for boarding this preseason? I think Jody Shelley already got suspended and some dude named Testwuide (sp?) got 5 and a game friday night for boarding Brendan Smith and now this Sestito guy?  This is getting ridiculous.

That’s what I don’t get either. He saw his numbers 20 feet way and did nothing to slow up or stop the hit. It’s like a bull seeing that red blanket.

I’m starting to believe today’s players are the dumbest athletes on the planet.
It’s like they shut their brains off during a game and play on pure emotion - with some bordering on hate.

There is no room for that hit in this game and I hope Shanny gives him at least 10 games.

Absolutely asinine.

Of course it’s a Flyers player committing the offense. Don’t the troglodytes in that organization get it by now? It’s called “Hockey” not “Kill The Guy.” Just a bunch of goons on that team, which is why they won’t win crap again this year.

No, the top brass and the owner in Filthydelphia think this is great.  Shanahan will have a field day with that bunch of goons.  This hit is well worth 20 and might even be worth escalating to 30 games.  Of course, this guy is a spear carrier who probably will play about 67 seconds per game.

Doubt he’s a repeat offender.  I expect less than the 20 people are asking for.  By a large margin.

Oh, I don’t think he’ll get 20 games either…but he deserves to.
